Comment:
Thanks to Gary (Muzag) for the suggestions. Strange rules make for strange mixes, indeed. ;)[1] A track that annoys animals: Pure guesswork since I don't have any pets, but I'm quite sure cats 'n dogs etc. will hate this. Goldfish might find it tolerable, though.
[2] A track with French connections
[3] A track that is visual as much as it is musical: Kenyon Hopkins (the man who was behind almost everything Creed Taylor was ever allowed to record) scored Robert Rossen's 1961 masterpiece "The Hustler", and this is very much like it: wild, cool and swingin' crime jazz.
[4] A track by an artist you regard as underappreciated: I seriously wish someone could bring her to record again; her rich, soulful voice is just incredible, and who ever heard her sing fell in love with her right on the spot (well, at least I did).
[5] A track that should be used in an advert: As the title of this lovely bossa nova tune is "Fuck at Last", I'd like to suggest an ad for, er, mineral water?
[6] A track that mentions a colour in the title
[7] A track from a favourite instrumentalist
[8] A track that's a guilty pleasure but that you don't feel guilty about at all: Saturday Night Fever RULES!
[9] A track predominantly featuring someone named Philip, George, Arthur or Keith
[10] A track by a classical composer/artist who you'd like more people to listen: taken from "Captain Humes Poetickall Musicke" (1607)
[11] A track from the oldest album in your collection: It most certainly isn't the oldest album in my collection but the first one I ever bought with my own money - "Purple People", a Purple Records label sampler from 1973 feat. quite a lot of interesting and long-forgotten stuff, including this lovely ode to fast food by the man who (as a producer) gave the world loads of great records by even greater artistes such as Saga, Rush, Journey, Stevie Nicks and Tina Turner.
[12] A track you like that was introduced to you by a friend with normally appalling musical taste: In fact, his taste isn't THAT appalling, it's just that he's been listening to the exact same crap for 20 years. Which was when I turned him on to Material which in turn is why to this day he buys just about every other record Bill Laswell produces (and trust me, that's a freaking lot).
[13] A track featuring only the artist and his/her instrument: Nothing but Todd Rundgren's glorious voice on this anti-war song, just his voice dubbed and redubbed and redubbed and redubbed and . . . Taken from his excellent "A Cappella" album (1986).
[14] A track to make people stop talking and start listening: Thou shalt stop talking and listen whenever the almighty XTC are playing (or being played).
[15] A track that is amongst the quietest that you own (whilst not being entirely silent): From the brilliant "Unknown Public" series I can only recommend . . . strongly.
[16] A track that reminds you of a specific moment in your childhood: Summer vacation, Italy, 1973. A beach bar had this fabulous LZ single in their jukebox, and I kept playing it over and over again till other patrons literally forced me away from the damn thing.
[17] A track that is religious: One of the worst cases of Christian-fundamentalist child abuse imaginable; two obviously clueless little girls singing a grotesquely gruesome ditty about the evils of Darwin's evolution theory. Has to be heard to be believed.
[18] A track that mentions a meteorological phenomena in the title
[19] A track in a musical style that you don't normally like but do like in this case: Tango is among my least favorite (or most despised) genres, right up there with Klezmer, Dixieland and Southern Rock. But this is just beguiling . . .
[20] A track you think/know your grandparents would like: A classic German Schlager from the 1930s; this version is just one of many, but I really love that Django Reinhardt-ish groove of it, and I'm sure my grandparents would love it, too.

Feedback:
Wow, there is a lot to recommend here, not the least of which is that cover!Love that Merle Travis track, and the Bee Gees "Jive Talking" is also a not-so-guilty pleasure of mine. Also, extremely fond of the Rundgren album, too, as well as the Zeppelin tune and the XTC. But the cream of the crop is that Gwen McCrae tune -- can't get enough of her! Excellent job with some great suggestions.
Wow - you went whole hog on the religious pick (cut #17). That might be one of the disturbing things I've ever heard - and yet I keep playing it because it's oddly catchy in it's own fucked up way. (If you haven't heard it, you can download it here along with tons of other oddities.
Lot's of good stuff here. I haven't made a "rules mix" since the Frankenstein thing but they always produce good (and conversation starting) mixes. I think your call is spot on that John Zorn would annoy animals. Nice job.

Very, very well done and I really enjoyed your comments - I looked at the "rules" for each before I looked at the track you had chosen, and was surprised and pleased for the most part - and, in some cases, intrigued - at what you had chosen. Got to agree with you on XTC. And you have no idea how much I want to hear track 17. :) By the way, while I don't have any pets either, I've heard that the insanity at the end of the Beatles track A Day In The Life drives dogs nuts. I've always wondered if it's true. Anyway, nice mix!
Most excellent, loved your'comments too. This has definitely set me thinking of a version of my own, I'll have no problem with the opener cos i perfected the art of driving my wife's cats out of the house years ago, though these days they don't bolt out of the house they just give me what passes for a look of disdain as they slowly leave the premises. Top job.
looks like you'd throw a good party!
Excellent Thomas. Goldfish may or may not dig track 1, but it definitely wilts my plants. Love the cover, but, uhm is the woman on the floor OK? Does she need help do you think?
This is one wild party!
Great stuff, Thomas and brilliant notes, as well.
Very intriguing stuff. Great explanatory notes.
So what website are you ordering your porn from!? The photographer could be my mom because she's always cutting off people's heads. Anyway, this does look intriguing -- lots of oddball selections from someone who's a bit odd himself ;) Most of us Americans know Crystal Bernard as the perky blonde from the 90s sitcom Wings, and not for half of the anti-evolution sister act. The Ocean is one of my favorite LZ songs as well, and Jive Talkin' is one of the Bee Gees better efforts from their falsetto-filled disco days. Can't say that I know much else here, but I'll echo the wild party sentiments.
That cover is insane in the membrane, which is exactly what I'd expect from you ;) I'm so happy to see Gwen McCrae and Arthur Russell together on a mix (even though the latter's only there because his name is Arthur. Boooo.) Bottomline: I want to hear this!
Abstrus Genialer Mix. As always.
Nice to see a Dauerfisch Track here on AOTM.
Nv Weird Cover Picture, looks like IKEA whitout an pricetag :)

Outstanding Herr Mohr! Great notes, too. We are (well, some of us) blessed that your friend is a Laswellian-obsessive. Count me among the fans of that BeeGees tune also...skiffle-like ain't it? (I had a very clear mental picture of the patrons in Italy giving you "the look" and muttering: "Damn! There goes that kid, back to the verdammt jukebox! Somebody stop him--if I hear "the Ocean" one more time I may kill him.")Always a good call with Verlaine....the rest, hmm, I may need to hear it....(just a theory, but the girl on the floor may just be taking a "timeout" from the action......girls and their cookies, ya' know.)

piece of shit rippers on this site best go fuck themselves
bad karma allways catches up to you, fuckface.
Since the above gentleman obviously disliked my using his (most excellent) picture as a cover image for this humble sonic offering, I promptly and happily complied to his understandable request which, as you can see, was presented in just about the most friendly way imaginable. Wouldn't hurt if he learned how to spell, though.
Wow did you ever think perhaps you should contact the artist before ripping his art. Asshole, people like you make me sick.
Well, this one produced some interesting and considerate responses ;~)
I have been meaning to do one of these myself (I have a partial tracklist somewhere)...but as I originally proposed it as a diversion over Christmas, I might have to wait until next Christmas to finish it off :)Anyway, some great & interesting picks, Thomas (must check out Tobias Hume).

This certain photographer seems to be a really nice guy! My advice: Get over it and get a life.
I think we should all pitch in for the ú2500 so that Mr. Mohr can get his cover back.
Great job, and I really like the new cover art! The Monkey Song is also one of my all-time faves.
I totally agree on your Gwen and saturday night fever picks
Yikes! Hey, can we charge this Cowa..., er, Cowling for the use of the word motherfucker? Hmm, instead of payin' the mofo (as per Moe) how's about we just recreate the disputed photo? What say you? I'll be the bed!
I thought I'd commented on this, but then looking at the tracks, I can see why I didn't... I only know Jive Talking. I LOVE that song! Definitely my favourite Bee Gee's song. Oh yes it is!
