Comment:

The second of a planned trilogy of mixes (the first was Back it Up Like a U-Haul Truck) commemorating an Event and
intended to be used for lots of driving.

Death Cab: all I find/are souvenirs from better times/before the gleam of your taillights fading east/to find yourself a better life. I was skeptical about this song at first, seeing it as a prime exhibit in Ben Gibbard's inability to break free of meter and play with his vocal delivery, but I like the way it works in this track and builds up to that one two-part harmony on "collide."

Snow Patrol: All these places feel like home. Deceptively happy singalong, massive hooks, angsty in all the right places. Of course it's the KEXP single from the album; why did you ask? :)

Heatmiser: riding on an avalanche of things you just don't say. Yes, Elliott Smith could rock when he had to, and this song is Exhibit A.

Radiohead (actually Thom Yorke plus John Auerbach and Ken Stringfellow): I am fused just in case I blow out. Achingly gorgeous unplugged version of the song from Pablo Honey, recorded after Thom had embraced his falsetto and before he wrecked it.

Bruce Springsteen: Your eyes get itchy in the wee wee hours sun's just a red ball risin' over them refinery towers/Radio's jammed up with gospel stations lost souls callin' long distance salvation/Hey, mister deejay, woncha hear my last prayer hey, ho, rock'n'roll, deliver me from nowhere. Obviously the source of the mix title, and one of the finest rock and roll road songs ever written, despite being essentially a solo performance on Nebraska. Having just driven the Turnpike again it's funny how little has changed in 22 years.

Clem Snide: When it's my moment in the sun/I'll share my problems with the world. Apparently he wrote the lyrics as a Jewel parody, but it functions pretty well as a blogger's anthem.

Beulah: No one wants to hear/about your hardwood floors. Yep.

Iron and Wine: Mother forgive me, I sold your car for the shoes that I gave you. I first heard this in the car, exiting 520 coming home from something in Seattle in the late summer dusk. I thought it was a hundred years old. It probably is on some level.

Buell Kazee: Old Civil War ballad, or maybe older. Sounds newer than the Iron and Wine tune thanks to Kazee's concert-style delivery.

Nick Drake: I'm growing old and I don't wanna know. Complete with tape hiss, the last of Nick Drake's released recordings before his death from too many antidepressants. Brilliant guitar on this song, contrasted by the vocals, which are fretted and ragged at the edges and as close to howling in a few points as Drake ever got.

My Morning Jacket: His arms were thin, and off into the night/they ran. This version, an a cappella performance from an EP, is equally as sweet as the version from their first album but more intimate and in better tune.

Brenda Kahn with Jeff Buckley: In the middle of your book of ages you write your dreams down to the letter. I have carried this song around for four years and just now figured out what to do with it. Makes the MMJ tune sound boisterous by comparison.

Pernice Brothers: Will there be any stars, any stars in my crown/when at evening the sun goeth down?
