Comment:

Each song in this mix is based on an opera. Some are
rock or pop (or soul or techno) remakes of
operatic arias; others are songs that take their story or
characters from some
classical opera. Notes on the operatic reference of
each song are listed below. Enjoy!

-----------------------------------------

1. Albert Einstein meets Humpty Dumpty.
Philip Glass, Einstein on the Beach.

2. Cover of "Alabama Song" from Kurt Weill, The Rise
and Fall of the City of Mahagonny.

3. Malcolm plays Pinkerton as a hick, and even samples
"Un bel di vedremo," as he tells the story of
Giacomo Puccini, Madame Butterfly.

4. From Rent, an NYC-based, HIV-positive, Doc-Martens-wearing
adaptation of Puccini, La BohFme.

5. These singers record in the UK as the "Opera Babes." This is
a remix
of the "Flower Duet" from LTo Delibes, LakmT.

6. And your Momma's good looking.
George Gershwin,
Porgy and Bess.

7. From Elton John's stage adaptation of Giuseppe Verdi, Anda.

8. For the story on this one, see
Teenage Temptress Does A Striptease For Step-Daddy.
Richard Strauss, Salome.

9. As you know from our friends
*ash*
and
Markkind,
there is a lot of affinity between
opera and metal.
This one is from Kamelot's Epica,
based on Charles Gounod, Faust.

10. ...and this is from Rheingold, based on Richard Wagner,
Das Rheingold.

11. Just like Pagliacci did, he tries to keep his sadness hid.
Ruggero Leoncavallo, I Pagliacci.

12. Based on Isaac AlbTniz, Merlin.

13-15. An eager nymphomaniac; an exotic beauty; a
seductive delinquent.
3 interpretations of the hot-blooded leading lady of
Georges Bizet, Carmen.

16. This reworking of Lucia's "mad scene"
was used in the soundtrack of Fifth Element.
Remix of "Il Dolce Suono" from Gaetano Donizetti,
Lucia di Lammermoor.

17-18. Ash are going on a long journey.
Fatboy Slim completely reworks the famous Can-can dance.
Jacques Offenbach, Orpheus in the Underworld.

19. Jazzy style but gangsta content. Cover of
"Die Moritat von Mackie Messer" from
Kurt Weill, The Threepenny Opera.

20. A fun take on Gioachino Rossini, The Barber of Seville.

21. Narration and gunshots over the "galloping" section of the
overture to Rossini, William Tell.

22. Based on the opera to end all operas:
Wagner, Die G÷tterdSmmerung.

Not bad! Not bad at all...a very inventive departure from the collections that usually populate this site. Special thanks for including my favorite song from RENT. And what opera mix could be complete without Bugs' singing in "What's Opera Doc?" Cheers! -Famous.

hey ed,

thanks for the trade and the comments on north of the border v.1. i am not aware of any tpoh / marshall crenshaw relation, but as the tpoh song was from 1988, it's not too farfetched that one might exist.

fave operatic tracks from this mix are 5, 9, 12, 13, 15 and 21. other tracks enjoyed were 6 and 14. excellent !
