Comment:
The Reivers (originally called Zeitgeist, but the discovery of another band with the same name around the time of the release of their 1985 debut required a quick name change) were one of many fine jangle-pop bands populating the college radio airwaves in the mid-'80's. They were distinguished by a mellow country-western vibe (not unlike the Long Ryders), adding a bit of Gram Parsons to indie pop years before Uncle Tupelo popped up (and Reivers co-vocalist John Croslin at times even sounds like a somewhat less urgent Jay Farrar); an occasionally bland sound was beefed up substantially by the traded vocals of Croslin and Kim Longacre, making them jangle-pop's answer to John Doe & Exene. Mix equal parts R.E.M., Parsons, and X, and you get the picture. None of their other 3 albums were quite as throughly great as their debut, but over 4 discs and a few singles they offered up just enough for one killer mix.
Feedback:
Haven't heard these guys since the late 80s. I bought a couple of their cassettes (remember those?), yet I don't think I remember a single song -- though I do recall liking them. Anyway, it's good to see that someone has rescued them from obscurity. Perhaps VH-1 will reunite them next season.
I have never heard of them at all, but you have whet my appetite, Marc. Nice work again.
Never heard of these guys, but sounds promising based on your comments...
Good god - I haven't heard or thought about these folks since the 80s. Wait... Moe just said that. They were cool, though. Marc, you're like the encyclopedia of 80s college rock - in a good way.
