We realize that Cube is a lot more family friendly these days, but we’d [i]never[/i] refer to him by his real name, O’Shea Jackson. Not unless his mother were around or something. After all, the former N.W.A. MC is one of the godfathers of gangster rap, a wise guy who deserves our respect for painting chilling but catchy portraits of ’hood life. Take “How to Survive In South Central,” a crash course in making your way through L.A.’s minefields. Or the sleek G-funk beats of “Ghetto Bird” — a cruise-controlled attack on the men in blue — and “Smoke Some Weed,” a sitar-led break from all those sirens and unmarked cop cars. Listen to them long enough and you’ll know [i]exactly[/i] why Cube’s one of the greatest syllable-chompin’ MCs around.
