The White Stripes
Comment:
The White Stripes made their name as garage-rockin’, blues-blastin’ undergrounders who ascended to arena status. But along the way, they made a host of head-turning detours. Jack White comes across like a blues-rock bullfighter with 1,000 volts of electricity crackling through his red cape on “Conquista,” the Spanish-language version of Icky Thump’s “Conquest.” On the unplugged side, bluegrass-tinged folk tune “Little Ghost” harks back to Jack’s role as a Civil War-era troubadour in the movie Cold Mountain, and “I’m Lonely (But I Ain’t That Lonely Yet)” is a slow-rolling, ivory-tickling soul ballad that wouldn’t have sounded out of place on a late-’60s Aretha album.
