Smallwood's recording career began in 1982 with the Richard Smallwood Singers, who became the first black gospel group to tour the Soviet Union. [i]Testimony[/i] was cut ten years after that debut, and contains rich and soulful fare like "I Won't Be Troubled" which would give the best of vocalists in any genre a run for their money. And when it's time to pick up the tempo, Smallwood is more than equal to the task, as he proves with guest vocalist Kim Burrell on "Journey" with its glorious bursts of brass and pew-pulsating bass line.
