Comment:
2003/03/02 --- iqaluit, nunavutthe mix makes a kind of oblique commentary about my thoughts just before the U.S. invasion of Iraq that occurred later that month on the 20th. we had held a local peace march, but the cdn govt was still willing to assist in the assault if saddam was given a brief extension to accede to the U.N. demands.
in the end, the u.s. wasn't interested in delaying and cda stayed out. in hindsight, it's obvious that the cdn govt made the right decision, but i still wonder about how uncontroversial the slide to war was for the great majority of folks and how close we were to joining in this madness. what will it take to rouse the slumbering from their sleep ?
ok, looks like annotations are in order ... please excuse me if, a year later, i over-reach a tad.
01. globalization doesn't benefit everyone
02. "i love the actors on the screen / in every desperation scene / looking uglier than me" - the sorry sight of protesters on both sides of the issue talking past each other
03. "i saw it coming / like summer rain / incoming ocean / oncoming train / i veered in circles / to get off your path" - the final 'kiss' for saddam ?
04. "i wouldn't mind / if you told me i was wasting time / hard to be here / try to say these things when you're so near" - more excuses from saddam
05. "you're free to covet all you like / don't you try and stop me / i cling tightly to this life" - north americans who obliviously consume 25% of the world's energy
06. Frodo decided to do what he knew must be done - as did both those for / against the war
07. "i have a future / i have substantial bank accounts / make lots of money / ... / welcome to eden / i hope that you have some time to shop / making investments / ... / business is business" - Dick Cheney's theme song ?
08. "there's no jesus here to explain / ... / come take me high above our time / ... / you justify / and you're not afraid" - Bush praying for divine guidance ?
09. "i'll be there for you when you want me to / i'll stand by your side like i always do" - what Bush heard from Blair (and might've heard from Chretien given a few more days)
10. "by nightfall, these hills will be swarming with orcs"
11. track begins plaintively but partway thru, the melody kicks in - like the media companies swooned when the ratings soared as the bombs dropped
12. successful demonstration of the 'shock and awe' propaganda on the american public
13. mission mis-named 'Operation Iraqi Freedom'
14. better if Jason Bourne had taken care of Saddam on the quiet ...
15. i imagine this tune being pounded out on the top floor of the al-Rashid hotel as the bombs drop around Baghdad
16. you know the scene in 'Good Morning, Vietnam', where Louis Armstrong is played as an aural backdrop to scenes of bedlam ? same thing here.
17. "today i saw somebody / who looked just like you / ... / i felt so ashamed / when it wasn't you / you are everything / and everything is you" - and the hunt for the elusive 'weapons of mass destruction' continued
18. "and i'm sure it's indisputable / they say toledo's beautiful / and i'm here at the perfect time of year / well no offense toledo / but i'm going home" - how many tour extensions will the disgruntled reservists tolerate?
19. "the angels let us down / too bad for us / we got off that merry-go-round / feeling tired / feeling sick / feeling cut to the quick / too bad for us"
20. "what a surprise" that the iraqis did not welcome the u.s. occupation with open arms.
21. "we, the people, fight for our existence / we don't claim to be perfect but we're free"
22. a happy-go-lucky tune paired up with lyrics describing a depressing turn of events - ironic ?

Feedback:
So this is like political commentary in the form of a mixed cd?
i don't think that was a conscious decision at the time (other than the opening track), but looking back, it's very easy to see where my thoughts were pushing the selection of certain tracks. i've also added some cover art adapted from a poster that i did up around the same time (and re-posted less fuzzy artwork for previous mixes).
