Comment:
According to UK Charts and the US Cashbox-Charts, those songs never reached the top because the position was taken by a Beatles Song (see statistics below).Personally, I like the Beatles (though I wouldn't consider them the best band in the world), I was just curious who they denied. Which was sometimes good, i.e. I'm glad to see "Eight Days A Week" denied that silly Jewel Akens tune. On the other hand, the Beach Boys deserved to be on top much more for "God Only Knows" than "Yellow Submarine/Eleanor Rigby" (again, personally speaking). Overall, I think it's quite balanced, and as we all know, the peak position of a song does not reflect too much of it's power.
A last note on the source for the US-Charts: as I didn't have access to the weekly Billboard-tables, I had to use the Cashbox-Charts and then look the candidates up in the Billboard-Charts for supplemental information.
Comments are welcome.

Feedback:
Great idea! You're def. right about God Only Knows... Nice eclectic mix of 60's
Wonderful concept!
Fantastic. Almost definitive, in my humble.
wonderful idea
nice concept!
Great idea!
I didn't mention it above but just for the record, this list is exhausting, and in correct chronological order for the UK and the US, respectively.
Cool idea. And two tunes are Beatle-penned.
Very cool - and well-researched.
Wow. What an inspired premise you've got here. In total agreement about the Beach Boys. Where would I be without that song? Fantastic Job!
Excellent idea! I'd like to add "well-researched" but 12vman got it first! Well done!
Very nice. Great idea and execution.
I agree with everything said thus far -- a great idea for a mix. The only problem I see is that I'd have to listen to a few really crappy songs (the Poppy Family, Bobby Vinton, Jewel Akens).
wicked concept
yeah, in some ways it's more interesting to look at the runners-up, but stacking most of these up against their Liverpool competion, I'd have to say the charts were right for once . . . it would have been something for Arthur Brown to go to number one, though - how many one-hit wonders ever made it all the way? ah, but that's another list . . .
Thanks a lot for all your comments :-) It's quite odd that this mix got so much attention, but in my opinion it's not even a real mix, or let's put it that way: from all the mixes I did it's the worst one (speaking of the music)...ok, I had an idea, did the research, came up with a list according to the results and put the pieces together. But there is no flow in there (how could?). I don't even like most of the songs (i totally agree joey de vivre) - it's like putting together all the #1s of each month for a given year on a mix and you end up with the same bag of (well...)good popular music and crap...but the future is bright and the next mix will be better, promise!!
Outstanding! Mary Hopkin must be one bitter chick.
I love that Mary Hopkin song! Didn't Paul write it? I know I've heard the Beatles play that song on a bootleg... I'd love to trade for this if you want.
Fantastic.
