Comment:

Starting with the ’60s, just pick a decade, any decade, and you’ll find great Merle Haggard songs — such has been the man’s consistency, whether he’s laying down tracks written by others, or recording his own material. Fans of hardcore Hag should not overlook “Sing a Sad Song,” a tune he picked up during an early-’60s stint in Wynn Stewart’s band and took into the national Top 20 in ’64. “Leonard” (1981) is a tribute to his friend and fellow Bakersfield scene stalwart Tommy Collins, while “In My Next Life” remains a standout on the album named for the year of its release, 1994. The album If Only I Could Fly (2000) — a largely acoustic work featuring the brilliant “Wishing All These Things Were New” — showed Hag had lost nothing in genius over time.
