Now that you’ve covered the classics, it’s time to turn an ear to the — literally — jammin’ instrumentals lurking just behind the hits on your favorite albums. The J. Geils Band’s Full House is one of the all-time great live recordings in rock ’n’ roll, but the sucker punch comes on “Whammer Jammer,” when singer Peter Wolf says to harp man Magic Dick, “Blow your face out!” and then steps aside to let M.D. strut his stuff. Likewise, Reggatta de Blanc’s snappy singles may have made the Police superstars, but the title track’s roiling reggae/new wave whirlwind will blow your doors down. And it’s hard to imagine now, but before it floored festivalgoers at Woodstock, blazing Latin rocker “Soul Sacrifice” brought up the rear on Santana’s classic, boundary-breaking ’69 debut.
