Comment:

Made because we finished Heart of Darkness in English class. This mix was to counteract the boringness of that novella with some kick ass tunes, although they are both the same in that neither of them have a purpose or a point. If you ever want to read a story with endless description that basically leads to a worthless discovery, then read Heart of Darkness. Grrr. Enjoy the tunes, but read Heller or Vonnegut instead.

3 stars for speaking the gospel truth about a very dull story.

Although I'd give the mix a solid 4. So 7/5, then.

WHAT?! Heart of Darkness is a literary masterpiece. Granted it is a tad dry and predictable, and people expecting an exciting, grabbing plot would find it boring, but this is a dark, haunting, very well-written exploration of madness sparked by the African colonialization and exploitation. I found it to be an illuminating book.

Well, I guess we're all entitled to our opinions. Look, here's my deal with it. You keep hearing about Kurtz, and Conrad keeps this monotonous description of the jungle going for just a little bit too long. Then you get to Kurtz, and Marlow never really gains any insight from this "incredible man." I just wish after all that time that something would have happened with Kurtz, you know. I am one of those people who expected something a little more exciting, especially from a so called "adventure story."

Good selections especially Be-Bop, Groovies and Crenshaw. Of course you can't go wrong with Mr Skin either.
Read Richard Brautigan's In Watermelon Sugar: The Deeds Were Done And Done Again As My Life Is Done In Watermelon Sugar. Much shorter and succinctly descriptive.

Nice mix Alex, Dickens tops the list of boring authors in my book, takes him 3 pages to describe a chair! Try reading Banks' "Rule Of The Bone" (see my mix too) guarantee you'll enjoy the book.

I agree with your cool mix policy, but I disagree with your anti-James Conrad policy :)
Watch Apocalypse Now, it tells the same tale about a more recent event. And keep making cool mixes wioth Status Quo, the Groovies, and Marshall Crenshaw!

Your mix is awesome.

Your opinion of Joseph Conrad is significantly less awesome!

I found Heart of Darkness to be dull, but the writing itself from sentence to sentence is beautiful, and the story is amazing.

Oh well. To each her own. At least you got a good mix out of it.
