Comment:

thomas has the left the city of maladless to wander the tundra: in the distance a city approaches: it is the great, moving city of the tundra: a carnival in full lecherous regalia parades past thomas - the clowns and whores cavorting amongst the great wheels of the city.
thomas is led to the ruler: durbin the black: thomas is told of durbin's plans to attack burtrand (his half-brother) at stye-fiss mountain where burtrand is holding the ceremonies of the fallen in the valley of the kings.
durbin senses nothing to fear from thomas (rightfully so!) and allows him to set in the throne room while the great city swallows its citizens and begins its last massive push towards war.
