Comment:
The sounds of blue-eyed soul are alive and well today, with new artists busting out from all corners. Framlingham, England, may not be up there with Memphis and Detroit among soul hotspots, but British songbird Alice Russell put it on the map, letting the lowdown funk of “Got the Hunger?” feed her furious wail. Boston boy Eli “Paperboy” Reed started out busking in Harvard Square, but he moved to Mississippi to hone his sound, and it sure shows in the Southern-fried lover’s lament “Am I Wasting My Time.” But if it’s classic Southern soul you’re after, Dan Penn was one of its original architects — both Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding cut his Muscle Shoals moan “You Left the Water Running,” but no one can sing it like the man who, er . . . Penned it.
