Comment:

Siddhartha, a novel by Hermann Hesse is based on the Buddhist Culture that concerns one man's quest for Nirvana. This mix is a loose tribute to it, and follows the story chronologically with related songs. Hope you enjoy...below is a list of the chapters and how each track concerns them.

Ch.1 - The Brahmin's Son - Track 1, 2 - In this chapter, Siddhartha leaves his Brahmin livelihood and his home realizing it cannot offer him any sort of enlightenment, as he leads a very sheltered life.

Ch. 2 - With the Samanas - Track 3 - Siddhartha becomes a Samana, and much to his dismay, cannot learn anything about living life to its fullest. He learns only meditation and fasting, and how to temporarily escape from the self, not how to conquer the mystery of the self.

Ch. 3 - Gotama - Track 4, 5 - Gotama is rumored to be the most enlightened man ever to set foot on the earth. He is called "the Buddha," and many follow his teachings. However, Siddhartha rejects his teachings, finding that he cannot learn from an enlightened man, but must learn on his own.

Ch. 4 - Awakening - Track 6, 7 - Siddhartha realizes that he must learn from himself to achieve Nirvana. Now he is on his own, without his friend and follower Govinda, and he must travel onward in the search for his true self.

Ch. 5 - Kamala - Track 8, 9, 10 - Siddhartha meets two different women, who are not alike. This is a transition in Siddhartha's life, in which he comes to "love" a woman for the first time, even though she is rich, a whore, and demands money for one to become her lover.

Ch. 6 - Amongst the People - Track 11 - Siddhartha begins work as a merchant and a businessman, though he considers his job mostly a game and a pleasure. He is friendly, and not business oriented, but he makes plenty of friends.

Ch. 7 - Samsara - Track 12, 13 - Samsara is a game played by children that is fun several times, but not for eternity. Siddhartha considers his new materialistic lifestyle like Samsara by the end of this chapter, and his basically driven himself into depression because of the way he has become. He leaves this lifestyle.

Ch. 8 - By the River - Track 14, 15 - Siddhartha contemplates suicide by the river, realizing that his life has become deviod of meaning. However, he lays down to sleep, and has a symbolic awakening and decides that he must continue with his life and reach enlightenment. He comes to realize that his stint in a materialistic lifestyle was only one step on the road to Nirvana.

Ch. 9 - The Ferryman - Track 16, 17 - Now Siddhartha has become a Ferryman, and lives his life with Vasudeva, another Ferryman. He has learned from Vasudeva how to listen to the river and makes serveral important discoveries.

Ch. 10 - The Son - Track 18 - When Siddhartha meets Kamala again, he is surprised to find he has a son. Though he tries his hardest to give him loving and patience, his son hates him nonetheless, and eventually runs away. Siddhartha becomes depressed, because it is hard for him to experience the feeling of unrequited love.

Ch. 11 - Om - Track 19, 20 - Siddhartha still mourns the loss of his son, and continues to listen to the river for an answer. When he does, he discovers the life of his son has a parallel to his life in the way they both left their fathers to seek something different. Through natural spirituality, Siddhartha is able to recover from the wound and continue toward the quest toward Englightenment, though he has almost reached it.

Ch. 12 - Govinda - Track 21 - Govinda meets Siddhartha again, by accident. Govinda has still not reached full enlightenment by following Gotama, though Siddhartha has. Siddhartha finds it difficult to teach the abstract ideas of Nirvana to Govinda, but at the end, manages to give him a "taste" of it. Govinda, too, realizes that the only way to attain Nirvana is to learn from oneself and not from teachers--thus, Nirvana must come naturally.

An incredible novel.

beautiful. the perfect narrative mix -- i think since i've read it i've treated "Siddhartha" as a myth-structure to live by, and this is the pound-for-pound accompaniment.
