Comment:

The obligatory posthumous mix for one of the great voices of our era. Oddly, I was far more shaken up by his death than other recent losses (such as Joe Strummer and Joey Ramone), even though the Clash & Ramones had a lot more impact on me -- Smith's songs were just that personal, like a troubled friend sharing something with you. And, man, that voice. Not necessarily a thorough mix (i.e. I don't have the first 2 solo albums), but I mixed up his last four albums (plus some b-sides & Heatmiser tracks) to maximize variation between the quiet ballads and the dense pop songs.

can't go wrong with elliott. but you've get his first two albums, they're by far the most personal, as you describe his music. i'm sure you'll love 'em. elliott's not dead, he's playing music in heaven with john lennon and george harrison. right now, they're doing long, long, long.

This is nice. I did a similar right after he died, Check it out and we'll trade. I've really been into these live versions of some covers he does. It's amazing.

Looks cool. I'm sure that you've seen mine, so I won't post a link. You really should check out his second solo album, though--it's probably his best.

I was devestated by the loss of Elliott Smith and still haven't recovered. He was, by far, my favorite musician. Since then, I've been working on a lot of Elliott Smith mixes, from compliations of rarities to a fan tribute CD that I just finished mixing (and that someone is mastering, in mp3 form, for me). Anyone who wants all the Elliott Smith rarities you could possibly imagine can find them among the people in the SWEETADDIE chat room on the file-sharing program SoulSeek. (And Marc, get the first two albums... they're more distinctly Elliott than anything else in the catalogue.)

I must confess my ignorance. I've never heard Elliot Smith. If you folks like him, then he must be worth checking out, and this mix looks like a good place to start.

Very nice! I didn't get the most recent album until after I had posted my Elliott mix--I love the tracks you chose from that one, a lot I would have chosen too.

I couldn't make an Elliot Smith mix without including the first four, 8, 11, 12 & 21. All of which are missing from short wave radio's recent post. So I'd have to go for this mix over the more recent (sorry swr). And I much prefer his version of 'Because' to his take on 'Thirteen'...

(In contrast, if there is a broad consensus as to which of your songs are good and which aren't, maybe you need to do a better job tossing out the filler.)-

With respect I must disagree with the consensus you've hypthoized. I believe that there can't be any "filler" tracks becasue all of his tracks were so good. Also, I did add a disclamer saying that these may not be the best, but they are the ones I like. So, in hindsight maybe I should have called this "my personal elliott smith best (or favorits)"
And finally to sammyg123: it's ok, each unto there own... and I totally forgot about Waltz #2 (XO). Also, I didn't add "Because" in there cause I'm a huge Beatle purist and I tend to think that all covers of their songs always fall short to the originals. And also, I like the sort of rough sound on Thirteen, it's not as smooth as Big Stars original, and thats a good thing. : )
Oh and great mix Pop Kultcher, although I'm kinda "eh" on How To Take a Fall, & Baby Britain.
