What I've heard is that Otis didn't have any words written for the last verse of "Dock of the Bay", so he whistled it, planning to come back to it later - but then of course he died . . . & strangely the whistling ends up working better than almost any verse you can imagine in its place -
There's also an outtake where he muffs the whistling pretty badly & someone says "you ain't never going to make it as a whistler, man!"
