Comment:
First off, I cut this list down to the 30-song limit from a list of over 200 songs (granted, there were a few repeats in there) so bear in mind, I could have gone on (and on and on).The songs on this mix are gathered from various sources and, to me, they present the heart of The X-Files - especially that aspect which is represented in MSR/UST/angst fic - while also providing an ambient background suitable for reading. (And for writing, as well...if you, like me, are an author.)
This selection of artists and songs are not as random as they may seem. Most, if not all, of them are intimately connected to the X-Files in my mind and probably in the minds of others.
Mark Snow - self explanatory
Moby - self explanatory (also, after I bought the CD "Play," I listened to it almost exclusively while reading fic, and so the two are forever bound in my mind. "Inside" is, I think, the epitome of all fic-reading songs.)
Gillian Anderson - self-explanatory (though the song itself has a very "x-files" feel all on its own)
Enigma - the two songs here both have excellent X-Files music videos made to them. I was fortunate to see both at Scully Marathons of old, and I doubt either can be found online anymore. :( Also, I first became interested in Enigma in 1994, when I bought the CD "The Cross of Changes," and so it brings me right back to that time in my life, when the X-Files were just starting to figure in prominently.
Depeche Mode - same early-90's thing. Also, DP is my 2nd most favorite band of all time, and they just happen to have smooth, dark songs that lend themselves well to the mood.
Sarah McLachlan - I know I am in no way the only person who associates X-Files with Sarah McLachlan. How the association got started is a mystery; nevertheless, it is there and I shamelessly perpetuate it.
Radiohead, Tori Amos, Filter, Nick Cave - that early-90's alternative dark-mood thing, that just seems to be the ESSENCE of the show. At least in the early years. Love it! Also, the Filter song was on "Songs in the Key of X," (as well as "Hey Man, Nice Shot" being showcased in D.P.O) and Nick Cave's "Red Right Hand" was used in Ascension as well as "Songs in the Key of X."
The Smashing Pumpkins - also that alternative-90's thing - and they are my Most Favoritest Band of All Time Forever and Ever Amen. These songs just fit.
The American Beauty theme - actually, I saw an X-Files video to this, and ever since, it just SCREAMS XF fic to me. It's so beautifully heartbreaking.
Sting - okay, there should be more Sting on this list, but I realize it kinda changes the "mood" of the list, so I felt justified in cutting most of it. "Fields of Gold," Sting's 1994-released Greatest Hits CD was another of those I listened to constantly while reading fic. It was earlier, when I was just discovering fic and the fic seemed happier; I read mushy fluff, I enjoyed mushy fluff, and mushy fluff was appropriate listening material. After that it was forever associated with fic, though it became less appropriate. Still, this song remains appropriate, I think, and I even wrote a fic to it (and only it.)
Carly Simon - this particular song expresses some kind of longing that fits perfectly with my idea of the show. Or at least of the MSR. I don't know.
Keri Noble - excellent cancer-arc video (by Lyle) is set to it. Also, I actually know Keri.
Patti Griffin - another wonderful (Scully Thon) video set to this song.
Chris Isaac - do I even need to explain? This song is all that is Angst.
Dire Straits - an amazing and heartbreaking (and very ambient) song.
Escape Club - Early 90's song that brings me back. Extremely sad. It's a guilty pleasure.
Geez, I think that's all. I never meant for this to go on in such detail! But I hope you enjoyed reading it, and I REALLY hope you check out the mix!
