Comment:
Either a belated Hanukah present, or an early celebration of Christ's briss, a/k/a New Year's Day. A tribute to the rockin' members of the tribe (MOT). Definitions can be expansive -- after all, Elvis' great-great-grandmother was Jewish -- but I tried to stick with cases where the creative principal was a landsman, knocking out the likes of Bangle Susanna Hoffs and the Boss' Roy Bittan and Uncle Max. Also omitted are songwriters (Doc Pomus, Lieber & Stoller, et al), producers (Phil Spector) and businessmen (all of 'em). Kicked off by Madonna manager Guy Oseary's book 'Jews Who Rock,' but the last word clearly belongs to jewhoo.com. Apologies to Laura Nyro, Chris Stein, Yo La Tengo's Ira Kaplan, Friedmans Kinky and Dean, Manfred Mann (ne Lubowitz), Leslie West, that trio of Jews with Blues (Al Kooper, Mike Bloomfield, Paul Butterfield), Peter Green, Perry Farrell, the Clash's Mick Jones, Slash (ne Saul Hudson), Sylvain Sylvain, Doug Fieger, Danny Elfman, Robbie Robertson, Jim Croce (converted), Geddy Lee, David Lee Roth, Jorma Kaukonen, Eric Carmen, Randy Kalifornia, Flo & Eddie, Jay & the Americans and the Young Rascals. No apologies to Gene Simmons, Lenny Kravitz, Carly Simon, Carol King, Adam Sandler and -- it's a shonda -- Michael Bolton and Barry Manilow. For the record:Dylan: from Isaiah 21.
Cohen: from Yom Kippur liturgy.
Steely Dan: Fagen MOT, Becker not.
Country Joe: mom Jewish, as were most of the Fish.
Spoonful guitarist Zal (Zalman) Yanovsky sings lead and on 'electric gorgle'.
Zevon: dad Jewish, mom Mormon.
Sedaka: Sephardic family name Seduka.
Diamond: dubbed 'the Jewish Elvis'.
Lou Reed's dad changed name from Rabinowitz.
Richard Hell born Lester Meyers.
Joey Ramone born Jeffrey Hyman.
Elastica's Justine Frischmann's is daughter of Auschwitz survivor.
FoWayne frontman Adam Schlesinger.
Beck: maternal grandmother only, but identifies as Jewish.
Geils: Peter Wolf and harpist Magic Dick (Richard Salkowitz) featured here.
Alpert + composer Burt Bacharach.
Gainsbourg born Lucien Ginzberg.
Sammy Davis: most famous convert.
