Comment:

My "Best of 2004" mix. A good year, the best since 2001 (which is thus far my favorite this decade). Obviously, a lot of these songs have wound up on earlier mixes (particularly my "decade's best" mix, "This modern thought can get the best of you"), but I've got to make an exception to my "no repeats" rule for thematic summations at the end of the year. For this year's mix, I deviated from my "best song from the ___ best albums of the year" formula for the mix's sake. For instance, Simon Joyner's new album, Lost with the Lights On, is right around #10 on my year-end list; however, Simon does seven-plus minute tracks which more or less feature him and his acoustic guitar, and so does Jason Molina (which is at #5 on my list). Therefore, in the interest of keeping the mix flowing, Jason gets a song on the mix but not Simon. I also put "Spectacular" by Mr. Coxon on this mix. In theory, it's my third-favorite song on the album, but I included it here to beef up the number of uptempo songs here; since it's my album of the year, though, its third best song is still one of my favorite tracks from this year. Also, Plush's "Underfed" is one of my favorite albums from this year, but I declined to include a song from it here as I already included one from its finalized version, Fed, two years ago. At any rate, the title of this comes from Tom Waits. Enjoy.

Very nice, Rob. Several of my own faves on this one, as well. The Fiery Furnaces, Devendra Banhart, Streets and Nick Cave discs were all excellent. I just heard that Molina album for the first time a couple of days ago...another great one. As much as I like a lot of their output, Handshake Drugs is the only track that I really cared for off of their latest one.

Fine summation Rob. The Costello was an especially pleasant suprise with the Imposters sounding like a band and EC not trying to prove some musicological point or other. Love the Vetiver, Cave, Fiery Furnaces and Mission of Burma picks too.

Peter: Thanks for the suggestions. I heard a Phoenix album a couple of years ago that sounded okay, but haven't heard the latest one. I actually like Franz Ferdinand more than, say, Lambchop or Arcade Fire, but there wasn't one specific song that I liked as much as either "Steve McQueen" or "Crown of Love"... "Take Me Out" was originally slated to be here, but it just didn't "fit" as well as those tracks. Curtis: I agree with you re: Elvis. I had absolutely no idea that I'd love this album so much, let alone *like* it after the disasters that he's been unleashing as of late. Shawn: Yeah, that new Wilco initially didn't do much for me, but it's really grown on me as a whole with a few songs ("Handshake", "Less Than You Think"--at least the first three minutes of it--and "Hummingbird") becoming real standouts. That said, it's one of my least-favorite albums that made the cut for this mix. Bear: No, you really don't *need* to hear the Arcade Fire album... it's good, for sure, but not great. The song that's here, on the other hand, *is* the one great one on the album, IMHO.

I'm using both "Twilight" and "Crown of Love" in my next mix (and the latter is placed exactly the same way!).

Yep, I agreem 2004 was a great year for some great oldies and a whole load of newbies. I've included a couple of these artists on my mix of the year (5, 11 & 13) but am kicking myself that I ommitted Morrissey. Also, as P the Swede says, I should have included the Concretes. Great job.

Really great, Rob - so glad that you have Tom Waits, Joanna Newsom and the Divine Comedy on there. I wasn't able to get into the new Lambchop offerings much this time round, but I might try again! And there are definitely some things on here which I've never got round to checking out, but must. Yet another New Year's resolution. PS: I'll send an email soon about what I've put together so far for trading purposes!

Less overlap than I thought there'd be. I was happy that Elvis Costello, Tom Waits & Nick Cave all delivered the killer LPs I'd been hoping they still had in them. We'll have to include these in our next exchange as there's quite a few here that I missed out on.

Hey Rob! I missed this one. Mighty Tastey! Couldn't agree more on the Nick Cave. I revised my best of '04 because of your bringing that to my attention. I had written him off but that album's fantastic! This whole thing looks great...
