Another great one Gene. Love the Mingus -> Benny Green especially. I'll respond privately with the quiz answers so others can have a chance to get one o' these excellent volumes. Out from NJ.

I know Monk wrote a tune called Hackensack, but I don't know if this is the same version. I also know that Haynes (who recorded with Monk on at least one ocassion that I know of), Miles and Mingus all played with Monk at various times, but your references are likely more obscure. Again, nice mix.

Hackensack is indeed 1/2 of the answer...now as to the 2nd half...

Thelonius Monk loved pumpkin and also to play hackensack.

Another vintage g.a.b.'ian mood-mender. Smoover than a room temperature red and no headaches after...

Is this answer warm enough? Sphere's Tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse - a veteran of nearly 11 years in Monk's quartet - wrote "Pumpkin's Delight."

You're extremely close, Ion (so close, in fact, that I'll give you 1st dibs on the answer (lest anyone else read this clue and "scoop" ya): Shakespeare would ask "What's in a name?" (Charlie's band's name is somehow significant).

[For the record, Mr. Curtis Burns did e-mail me, privately, approximately 1-1/2 nano-seconds after I posted this mix, with the correct answer. That, however, is a private matter & the contest rolls on...with Moe @ the head of the pack...(so far)]

Okay, I got it! Sphere is Thelonius Monk's middle name! How easy was that! Thanks for the clue.

O.K. after a lot of monkey business...I think
(rather than be a geek) that we shall call it a day and declare
Moe the winner (for sheer follow through & persistence); or (in
other words), Moe had 'Mo on his side; : )
Go 'head 'n make yr choice, dood.
