Comment:
I Had this as a project for about 6 months. It was easy to find out about the originals. The hard part was finding the actual music. In the beginning it was quite easy, but it became harder as I went on.It's interesting to note that in some cases the originals are far better than the versions that became hits. But in most cases it's the other way around. Then again some originals are so much different than the hits so you really can't compare the two.
Notes: Brenda Lee's rendtition of "Always on My Mind" was probably recorded after Elvis Presley's was done, but was released first. Johnny Cash & The Tennessee Two did not have a hit with "Folsom Prison Blues" in '55. But when he performed it before an audience of prisoners at Folsom Prison in 1968 and released that version it became his biggest hit ever.
But by far the greatest track on this volume is "When You Say Nothing At All" with Keith Whitley. That version should have been the hit, not the Ronan Keating slaughter of a really teriffic song.
Feedback:
Excellent work. It's always fun to hear the original versions of songs later made famous by someone else. Check out my "Uncovering the Originals" mix, which shares this theme, but without any overlap.
Excellent stuff! So many fantastic picks. Like the Gene Pitney.
Marshall Crenshaw's recording of "You're My Favorite Waste of Time" might be my favorite recording of all time.
This is an excellent series. It looks like a lot of work went into this. I'd love to orchestrate a trade if you're interested.
"You're my Favorite Waste of Time" is one of my favorite songs. Props.
This is an excellent idea for a mix project and I congratulate you on it! There are so many interesting songs on all four volumes of this mix. But I do wonder if the title "Before They Were Hits" is entirely correct for all the songs. Keith Whitley's "When You Say Nothing at All," for example, was a number one country hit in America. Carl Perkin's "'Blue Suede Shoes,' a tune that borrowed stylistically from pop, country, and R&B music, sat at the top of all charts, the first record to accomplish such a feat while becoming Sun's first million-seller in the bargain," according to All Music Guide. There are some other titles on these mixes that were quite successful in their original version at least in America, but probably not in Europe. <
I'd love to hear these CDs, since many of these originals are unknown to me.
