Comment:

Just your basic, bare-bones chronological anthology here. While I like 'em fine as a background music kinda band, I've never enjoyed G500 as much as Dean Wareham's later (and more successful) band Luna -- his voice was still too thin in the old days, the band had a pretty limited range, and for the most part lacked both the hooks and sonic density that made Luna so great at its peak. Still, for all their limitations, Galaxie 500 had a few moments of glory and plenty of droning soundscapes that made for something more than just a routine run at a Velvet Underground imitation. And, of course, Luna's last few outings have been a mixed bag, and the band is calling it quits after their tour ends next month, so I figured it was time to give both their due. (I have an old Luna mix which I'm updating and expanding to a 2-cd set; should be done soon.)

Nice choice for a band I haven't heard in ages.

ok marc, i'm calling you out! i think that it's g500 that's the much better band than luna (who i like, but who seem more like a second rate vu to me). despite being "better" and less "limited", i think g500 is a whole lot more interesting (and with better songs) than luna. no offense meant, of course, and these are all great tunes.

Fair enough, Sean. But I think even the band would have to admit their abilities were pretty rudimentary; even their best songs had three lightly-strummed Velvet-y drones, generally breaking for a decent solo before returning to the original strumming bit. Which, mind you, I like -- hence this mix. But Luna, at least on its first 4 or so albums, had a much broader dynamic range. The first album had some actual rock and roll moments; the next three had some great songs, many of which made a far stronger impression on me than most of the Galaxie repertoire. But that's just me.

I've got one of these (I stood in line and ate my Twinkie). And I'm with Lally all the way on this--Luna are absolutely boring to me from the very first song on Lunapark to the present. To me, Damon & Naomi made this band great, not Dean Wareham. No offense meant to you, but I couldn't disagree more. And these are all great songs, btw.

I like some of Luna's stuff, but I adore Galaxie... anyway, most of my favourites here (no 'Oblivious' tho) and fine cover too.

Interesting discussion here on these guys as I've only heard two or three songs from each of the bands in question. Something more to check out.

I would enjoy hearing this. Like you, I never got into Galaxie 500 as much as Luna. This would be a good primer on the band.

Also, I probably like Damon & Naomi's solo stuff (especially that first release) more than Luna. That said, I'd probably like Luna a lot more if I'd never heard G500. But whatever... I've seen both live - and both are pretty dull on stage. But that's what you'd expect, eh?

Baby you can drive my Galaxie 500. Looks like a splendid tribute to the hardest rockin' band in show bizniss. Guess I'm more of a Luna-tic than a G500 man, just because the former had more upbeat pop songs in their repertoire. I am slowly discovering some of G500's body of work, like "Parking Lot," which is excellent. So when can we look for the Damon & Naomi mix?

Hey Moe: I've been planning a Damon & Naomi solo mix for years. Maybe I'll actually get around to it.
