Comment:
I did a Leonard single-artist mix in the fall of '01 but it just didn't cut it. First of all, I in my ignorance included tracks from only his first four albums. Secondly, I picked (in some cases) the wrong ones. So this is the total revision. In case it hasn' t been obvious from some of my recent mixed-genre mixes, I've been listening to him a lot in the past six months or so and have finally grown to appreciate him after all these years. So much so, in fact, that a volume two will be finished today or tomorrow. Last tracks cut (these were literally switched out at the last minute in a painful fashion): "Take This Waltz" (switched with "Everybody Knows") and "You Know Who I Am" (switched with "Tonight Will Be Fine"). I regret not including a single song from Death of a Ladies' Man (which I actually like, despite its reputation), The Future (which is okay, but not great) and Ten New Songs (which may not even be featured on the next mix, as I couldn't find a single song on it that knocked me out).Feedback:
once upon a big fav of mine but the last decade hes been really boring but I really love Various positions + the really old stuff of course
Really great--gotta respectfully disagree though. As great as his early stuff is, nothing can beat 10 New Songs. His latest isn't half bad either.
I like the newest album. I just think that Ten New Songs is a bland, chintzy snoozefest.
Very nice. I don't think I've not liked any of his albums over the years. I have Ten New Songs but haven't listened to it much. I should give it a spin.
Gotta dig out some of my LC stuff. Haven't listened to him in an age. Nice work, once again, Rob. I remember many moons ago, the British comedian, Alexai Sayle, doing a pastiche of Suzanne, which went something like this (Apologies to all Canadians!)
Suzanne, you bring me down, with the things that you do...when you bring me tea and oranges, I get depressed, don't you?.......and you tell me that just lately......the cat is depressed too......maybe it's because we're all Canadians.

I'd love to be a Canadian at this point, though. I'd take Scottish, as well, if it were offered...
you wouldn't dig our weather, my friend, trust me on that one!
HA! That Sayle version is BETTER!!!
Tower of Song is one of my favs of ALL TIME, so I'm glad that got the final word on this very nice mix. Everybody Knows is also killer. (But no Future? I disagree that it's lesser Cohen. I think it contains some of his most biting and trenchant commentary.) Cohen is a puzzle to me for this reason: One of the greatest popular poets of the 20th century has chosen some of the WORST, tacky, dime-store accompanying instrumentation in his later work of ANY musician out there.
I'm with you, Edward, on that last point. Even some of his greatest records--most notably I'm Your Man and, to a lesser degree, Various Positions--suffer from that problem, and the new record would be a lot better without that phenomenon. But better production and instrumentation couldn't even rescue Ten New Songs. Btw, I think that The Future is a good record, but it's just kind of dated to me. There'll be at least one song from it on Vol. 2.
Looks like you did a good job here Rob. My dad graduated from the same University as Mr. Cohen. It's my claim to fame.
Oh come on Rob, 10 New Songs is a great album, Here It Is & Alexandra Leaving are top tunes but then again so are all the rest that you chose, mind you The Future is my fave Cohen track so I guess we're just at opposite ends 'o' the spectrum this time. That said I was just watching his performance of Dance Me To The End Of Love on Dvd at the W/E (Jools Holland) = Superb & 'H' drooling over him like a soppy teenager.
This is intruiging to me. I would like hearing this summary of Leonard's later music, because I got off the Cohen Caravan after his 4th album or so (I was turned off by Everybody Knows). Is it too late to jump back aboard?
Controversial comments Rob!I've always liked LC from a distance (moody, trendy, scratched vinyl picked up at junk shops while at Uni) and have only started to really explore his music after listening to the soundtrack to Natural Born Killers . . . . which means I have a soft spot for the future. 10 new songs is great and I love his 'talk overs' on 'Dear Heather'.This looks great, however.
nice comp! saw a documentary on him recently when he was doing poetry readings way back when. he sure is "the man"......he comes, he goes but he's still here and hits the mark a good portion of the time.
Yah, I gotta agree with you Rob...I find 10 New Songs so arwful that I've refused to consider his latest...to me he's one of the great comic lyricists of the 20th Century & Nick Cave owes him heaps..always a great pleasure to see a Best Of!
Well, you know I"m not a huge fan - never quite got behind the voice. Still, I'd like to hear this comp. Maybe you can change my mind.
I'm 30-70 with Leonard (like 30%), but you hit lots of my personal faves. To me he's a great "in small doses" artist.
Whoa - I'm actually just listening to "Hallelujah", (Buckley version, admittedly) so to see this come up when I clicked the link was a pleasant surprise. (Incidentally, there was an article in The Sunday Times over here - possibly last week or the week before - about the song Hallelujah, which was really interesting.) I know a few people who don't like Cohen and have spent quite a while trying to convert them - often to no avail, but in any case, I am and remain a huge fan. (But yes, I will admit that some albums have their flaws, like Ten New Songs...) This is really nice to see though. PS: Your mixes are on their way this week! :)
