Comment:
Undoubtedly one of the most underrated bands of the 60's & 70's, Spirit's original incarnation ('67-'70) holds up surprisingly well alongside other San Francisco mainstays of the age. Their early albums may fall a notch below, say, the Dead, Airplane, and Moby Grape, but they were no less innovative and experimental. The usual rock/pop/jazz/blues stew of the age, plus a bit of Zappa-esque weirdness thrown in. Oddly, only "I've Got A Line On You" became a true classic rock warhorse, though it's an atypically straightforward rocker. After splintering into various different formations, frontman Randy California assembled a no less worthy version of Spirit for a few mid-70's albums (finally issued on cd this year). These were even trippier than the '60's stuff, with guitars and found sounds weaving in and out; the best bits of Spirit of '76 may have been the covers, but they put together some cool originals on the totally overlooked Son Of Spirit. Had a pretty hard time knocking this down to a single disc; when I get the chance, I may end up expanding it to two.Feedback:
superb. Underrated yes, and I love "I got a line on you" to death!
Haven't listened to much from this band in a long time, but now I'm thinking I need to rectify that.
what Mo said!
Echoing Gerry's sentiments exactly.
When I saw the title I thought this was going to be some sort of Will Eisner tribute. I had a roommate in college that spent a little too much time with his Spirit record on the turntable, so I've neglected them ever since I graduated. But looking at these cuts reminds me that they had a lot of great songs. I have the feeling I'll own a Spirit CD by the time I get home today. And yeah, "I Got A Line On You" is a killer.
New to me, will have to check them out.
BEAUTIFUL. You beat me to it. Perhaps you have a couple of those albums that I'm looking to get in order to do my version of this...
IFm pretty unfamiliar with this band. IFll check them out.
gotta check this out, haven't really never listen to them
Never quite got into this band - I'd like to hear this. I only remember the "12 dreams..." lp, and I no longer have it.
A woefully underrated band indeed. I still have their first four albums on vinyl in a box somewhere. The recent best of CD doesn't do them justice.
Love Spirit & as u say greatly underrated!
Oh yeah! One of my favorites from that era. Plenty of material left for a volume 2.
Now this is something I would love to hear, since I'm not too familiar with this band! I love edifying single-artist mixes like this.
Quite deserving of the single artist treatment. Randy California's Kapt. Kopter LP is pretty great as well.
Cool. Looks like more trade bait from up north. Don't know everything here by a long shot, but "Uncle Jack" has always been a favorite.
Excellent Marc, great band.
Count me in with the lo-fi thoughts.
Fresh Garbage - still seems fresh today
