Sock it to me (take care of TCB)
Comment:
Here it is--Aretha's prime Atlantic years. I finally completed this project after contemplating it for the past couple of years. It was actually pretty tough, since she was remarkably consistent between 1967 and 1972, and try as I might to include more non-singles tracks, her singles were often her greatest moments. Last tracks cut: "Son of a Preacher Man," "Niki Hoeky," "Don't Let Me Lose This Dream," "Rock Steady," "Try Matty's," "Love the One You're With" (a song that I loathe so much in the hands of its creator, Stephen Stills, yet Aretha really transforms it), "The Weight," "River's Invitation," "Pullin'," "Let It Be," "When the Battle is Over," "Groovin'," "If You Gotta Make a Fool of Somebody," "This Girl's in Love with You," "Night Life," and "Ain't Nobody (Gonna Turn Me Around)." (Actually, since there are no other songs of hers that I would want to include in addition to the 16 listed above, there will not be a second volume.)Feedback:
Clearly, there must be a second volume.
I only know her singles. I should check into her back catalgue. Anyway, cool mix. You hit upon a lot of her "greatest" moments.
Like most Motown/Atlantic/Stax artists, the singles are much better than the albums, in my humble opinion. Therefore it is difficult to make a compilation which is better or different from a shop-bought one. This is a great place to go for Aretha gold, if one cd is all you need. Nice work once again, Rob.
all great, of course. i like most of her 60s albums through and through - a few fillers, but her performances are always top notch.
The Queen of Soul of course. A second volume would be just as good.
I kept scolling down, looking for it-and I found it-the closer, Day Dreaming. I love that tune and I love the mix!
hi class stuff
One of my four favorite musicians ... and my first posting was my Aretha faves ... I like the Columbia stuff too ...
Fabulous. I have the Atlantic box set, which has many Aretha tracks, but I wish I had more! Many of these songs I'm unfamiliar with.
Oh this is just killa. I clearly don't have anywhere NEAR enough Aretha, and will need to rectify this. If you haven't sent them off yet (and you can find another one of mine you want), please add this to the pile.
Yah ditto The Vixen re:Columbia Recordings...when I was last in New York I got down to HMV & bought her entire 60's/EARLY 70'S BACK catologue. Haven't regretted it. Great singer, if not the greatest female singer of the 20th Century. Great to see u got Spirit In The Dark.
Can't argue with this. Aretha is boss.
1st off, thanks for your kind comments on a few of my mixes,Rob...secondly,I agree on the singles-are-the-best-Aretha stuff, and Do Right Woman (Dan Penn's finest songwriting moment,if ya ask me) & I Say A Little Prayer (one of my favorite songs & Aretha's version stomps on all others like a grape!)are about as good as it gets!
my socks are rocked.
Looks beautiful, Rob - a lot of thought obviously went into it. "Son Of..." is one of my favourites (isn't it everyone's?!) but I'm really glad to see "Save Me" and "I Say A Little Prayer" in there. Nice work.
