Comment:
Personally, the whole UK "pub rock" genre seems a bit overbaked to me -- how different is a lot of this from basic, generic R&B you'll hear from any white band in a local club? Yes, I understand its role as a precursor to the stripped-down simplicity of punk, but I think it's safe to say that, if it weren't for the presence of a young Nick Lowe, the Brinsley's wouldn't be as fondly remembered as they tend to be. That said, the band did produce some fantastic singles (though it's telling that "Peace, Love & Understanding," by far their most memorable track, was dramatically improved upon by Elvis Costello). Indeed, while most of their albums were lukewarm affairs, cut down to a highlights disc you've got 80 minutes of sheer bliss. For the record, I think their debut, frequently derided as an uneasy mix of pastoral Dead/CSNY-inspired Americana and Yes-like prog, is quite great (though given its distinction from the later Anglicized country and R&B grooves they perfected, I didn't use much of it here). Consider this the latest example of less-than-perfect bands resulting in fabulous single-cd anthologies.Feedback:
Nice work!
Reading something about them the other day- their ill-advised massive gig in NY... an uneasy mix of Dead/CSNY and Yes sounds kind of interesting to me.
Cool!
cool
This looks fabulous!
This is awesome. Great tribute to a really good band. All the band's highlights are hit here. You're pretty much spot-on in your comments. As a Nick Lowe fan in the 80s, I remember being a bit disappointed in their records once I finally heard them. I probably expected something more rockin' like Bram Tchaikovsky - now, there's an artist who could stand a decent mix. Might have to break out the vinyl for that one.
Love this. Would love to trade!!!!
WHOA. I'm REALLY interested in this, Marc.
This looks great! Exceptional facial hair in that cartoon...you can't swing a pitchfork without hitting some...!
As you say Marc.A fabulous anthology.A really good cover as well.
This looks really good.
Another obscure - to me at least - single artist mix. Awesome. They seem interesting. I shall pursue....
I've gotta get around to these guys some time. Sheer bliss... that's wot mixings all about, eh?
I'll 3rd the cool comments!
Never heard 'em...pub rock puts me off...the only decent pub band out of this shitty island I'm sitting in as I type was Doc Feelgood! Nevertheless an interesting mix!
and I always thought Brinsley was a he!
Steve -- Brinsley is a he: it's the name of the guitarist as well as the band.
c00l!
A Brinsley Schwarz mix?!? I love this place! Waitress, another round over here please.
I'll agree that pubrock is great stuff when it hits, but overall it just kind of sits there. So I am all for boiling it down to just the highlights - which I'm sure stands up to repeated listens.

After hearing this mix (and having long been intrigued by this band but underwhelmed anytime I heard a track), I'd say that it definitely stands up to repeated listens. Great job, Marc.
