Comment:
Although this seems like one of my most cerebral mixes (mostly due to the 32-minute Miles reverie that opens the mix and the 12-minute piano piece that closes it), it's actually pretty visceral and all over the map. Title from the Joy Division song. Hats off to both lo-fi (who provided me with the song months ago) and to Gerry (who included the track on his last mix and thus provided the direct inspiration for its inclusion here) for the Groundhogs track. Further props to Siobhan for getting me that import-only (over here) Bees disc, which has promptly become one of my favorite albums from the last year. And no, that Roots song is NOT by the (admittedly fine) hip-hop ensemble; it's a Lee Perry-produced dub classic. [Note: This mix was revised on 9/20/06. It has long been one of my couple favorites, but there was a dead-ish spot toward the end that I felt needed to be addressed. As a result, the Moving Sidewalks and Jim Reeves have replaced the Bees' "One Glass of Water" and Big Star's "She's a Mover."]Feedback:
I love that Miles tune, but have always been too intimidated to put it on a mix. One of those "where can you go from here?" tracks. Never in my wildest dreams did I think it could lead to Motorhead! Looks like you figured out my unsolvable mix problem, master of the mixed genre.
I should think this works very well...fine line up!
Fascinating.
Wow! Looks really great.
looks superb, Rob. Glad I am considered inspirational!
I'm most impressed with the Serge Gainsbourg track... one of my favorites. Nicely done!
Cool. I'd say Ornette was pretty visceral. The Captain too.
wonderful, your records was sent a couple days ago
Well, that's my favourite Joy Division song, so you've got my vote already. :) This is a really great mix from start to finish; I think I like just about everything here. And the variety of genres, I think, shows how carefully its construction has been considered. Nice work. And, of course, you're very welcome for the Bees album - glad you're liking it!
Looks excellent, Rob. Great picks all the way
Liking the Miles, Ornette and Big Star tunes. Most of my mixes start with the opener/closer combination and just make themselves from there.
nice Rob!!!!!!
Love the Joy Division-Gun Club-Beefheart trifecta. And a nice kick in the butt from Motorhead beforethe Felt cooldown.
This looks pretty eclectic. I like the 5 through 7 stretch a lot.
Friggin' brilliant, Rob. I too, love that Miles track. Kudos for another excellent mix, good sir. :-)
Lookin' mighty fine...
Yes, yes! Good stuff...
Nice not so dirty dozen you got here. Felt and Motorhead back to back could be first -- Lawrence vs. Lenny. I'd bet on the guy with the mole.
Love that Joy Division song. Nice mix.
This is a awesome party mix for Valentine's Day!!!!!!!
Fantastic Rob.
This looks great, Rob. I like your more experimental mixes... you should do more of them! I love that Joy Division song and the Serge song... and I just added a Felt album to my wishlist the other day! (don't really know them).
Teriffic stuff. Just the kind of informed eclecticism I aspire to
Just wonderful. The opener & closer are pieces of music of such immesurable beauty. In between, some fine stuff as always. Loved the Ornette Coleman tk, and the Bees pick is one of my faves off a fine album. Fantastic indeed.
Huh. If I had seen this in February '05, I'd have been your Valentine for sure.
