Comment:
11/3/07: My fourth revision of my Elvis Costello mix series begins here. This is now designed to be a 4-disc, chronologically-arranged, box-set style project. I have to admit that I don't listen to Elvis as often as I used to, but every time that I do I am struck by the following: 1) his amazing vocals; 2) his fantastic songwriting; and, most importantly, since they never get credit, 3) the unbelievable tightness of the Attractions' ensemble playing (not to slight Steve Nieve, who is fantastic, but the Thomases are arguably one of the top three rhythm sections in rock history--after the Beatles and the Who, IMHO; one listen to "Strict Time" should confirm this theory). So I have a question for all of you: What's your favorite Elvis C album (or your couple favorites, for that matter)? Mine is Get Happy!!, followed closely by King of America and Trust. Last track cut from this volume: "Waiting for the End of the World."Feedback:
I don't really have much Elvis Costello albums but I really like My Aim is True. I never really gotten into his music ....
I was waiting for hot chocolate the other day in a shop where they had "All this useless beauty" playing - pretty good record. I love all the early EC records - it's not that he went downhill, it's just that they meant SO SO much to me at the time; none of his later discs ever hit me as hard as, say "This Year's Model" or "Armed Forces".
Exactly what Sean says. I really like the four cd earlier version of this , Rob. One of the first trades we ever did. My fav of his is This Year's Model.
Looking good.Check my earlier Elvis mixes. My favourite album a toss up between My Aim Is True & Imperial Bedroom.
Ditto Sean in a big way. Red Shoes hit me about as hard as any song has ever done . . .
Jeeust starting to listen to Costello, actually... forever catching up: the curse of youth. But I gotta say, it looks like you've got all of my favorites thus far covered on the two disk set. Well done. We should trade sometime... if I ever manage to scrounge up something you don't have. ;)
I cheat. I listen to The Very Best Of Elvis Costello (two disc). I have an Elvis Album but I can't remember which one.
I pretty much love everything he's done except maybe the North album. I agree about Get Happy.
Like Elvis C in bits & pieces...prefer the greatest Hits album, the first one with the vogue lookin' models on the front...which I listened to a lot a while ago & was genuinely surprised at how good he was and how boring he became...I keep seeing his albums in the get rid section of my local music emporiums but I readily admit that he's done a lot of class stuff...my fave Costello tracks are Pump It Up & What's So funny....' any way a good lookin' group of mixes!
This is the one! My favorite Elvis is Get Happy followed closely by King Of America...I never get tired of hearing that record.
Costello remains on of my touchstone artists even as his more recent dilettantism has turned me off. And you're absolutely right about the Thomases. Bruce is perhaps my favorite rock bassist, the subject of my next "Give the Bass Player..." mix if I ever get around to finishing it. And the reason why I picked up the bass and put it back down. Favorites..."Imperial Bedroom" is perhaps my favorite album, but, not necessarily my favorite Costello album if that makes sense. Favorite Costello would be "This Years Model" and "Get Happy" and "Imperial Bedroom" and "Trust" with "Blood and Chocolate", "King of America" and "Almost Blue" in the mix.
Ditto Curtis...
This Year's Model earns top marks from me, followed by King of America and My Aim is True. And even though the Costello purists might disagree, I confess I have a soft spot for Punch the Clock (I especially like the live version of Everyday I Write the Book you included here).
Good stuff here, although "Blood And Chocolate" is woefully absent. B&C tends to get top honors with me these days, with "Get Happy!!" coming next and probably "Trust" getting the bronze. "Armed Forces" was my favorite for many years, but it's lost some of its luster for me. I can't stand the "production years" phase, namely "Imperial Bedroom"-"Goodbye Cruel World." As for the Attractions, I sing their praises whenever I can. Pete and Steve are *still* amazing instrumentalists, too, as evidenced by the phenomenal Imposters show I saw two months ago. (A 2&1/2 hour mega-eclectic set with no breaks.) Bruce was fantastic. "Opportunity" is one of my all-time favorite basslines to play on bass.
He came through St. Louis recently with Dylan and his voice is still incredible, although it was difficult to judge compared to Bob's ever sadly-fading warble...
