Comment:

Surfin' Bird!!!!! Is this the greatest song of the rock and roll era? Shit yeah, it is! Well,... I like it. This is a tribute to the song they'll be playing at my funeral, and the "Papa Ooh Mow Mow" that spawned it. The song is timeless and historic. I'd like to think it was played as Rome burned, as the Titanic sank, as Buddy Holly's plane crashed, as Bush stole 2 elections, as RFK was shot, while Giordano Bruno was condemned, among the more famous tragedies - a little goof in the face of horror. There are many more versions of Surfin' Bird out there, and plenty of other similar classic tunes sporting the "ooh mow mow" - some may make it to a revised (or is that reviled?) edition. Truthfully, I doubt most of you can get through these few songs in one listening -- unless you're among the brave and powerful! Thanks to Gerry for giving me the Big Itch (so to speak), from which some tracks were swiped. Dedicated, with love, to all my friends on AotM - you know who you are. THE BIRD IS THE WORD! D'ya hear me?!?!?

LOL. Labor of love, indeed. Dunno if I could stand having to listen to the whole thing in one sitting, but taken in homoeopathic doses, I'm sure this is some good ol' fashioned fun.

I was ready for this after last night's conversation, so... well, this looks like a load o' fun-o-riffic laughs, although I have to second Mohr's hesitation about listening to this all at once (even though, as you said, it's only half an hour long). Great idea, though. By the way, I never posted this mix, but sometime in the last couple of years, I, at Jen's request, put a mix together which repeated the four versions that I have of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" (Cohen, John Cale, Jeff Buckley & Rufus Wainwright) for the entire 80 minutes. :-)

the final, definitive word on the bird? I think so. I like to recall when I saw the Cramps do it live in NYC

OH my god ... this so reminds me of being a little kid in Southeast LA, just near enough to the beach where the whole surf craze was beginning to happen. These songs, those phrases were mystical. Couldn't get enough of them ... love love love this!

Word! If we can only choose one cultural artifact to represent humanity to tyhe rest of the universe, it should be the Trashmen doing Surfin Bird.

If you have room for a few more on the "reviled edition", I could send you Pee Wee Herman's version (crazed, of course!) & a peruvian garage band, Los Shains, doing "El Baile de Pajaro Tablista" - whaddya say?

Yes, I hear ya loud and clear, birdman of AOTM. I think in the director's cut of Titanic you can actually heard Surfin Bird being played in the background during the film's climax
