Comment:

Not much to work with, as Epic managed only three proper solo albums before his suicide/OD (plus a few posthumous rarities collections which I didn't bother picking up). It's too bad, as what little music he did put out there is pretty stirring. For those unfamiliar with Epic -- he started out as the drummer for experimental punk band Swell Maps, and then hooked up with various indie post-punk acts, making it somewhat surprising when he kicked off his solo career with a largely piano-driven album that sounded like he'd spent his life listening to early Todd Rundgren, as well as some Nilsson and Carole King. (That the album featured members of Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. made the mellow balladry and orchestrated pop that much surprising.) His follow-up albums varied things a bit, with more guitars and less piano, but (a few upbeat exceptions aside) he stuck largely with gloomy ballads and baroque pop. It's a nice, enjoyable body of work that really deserved a larger mainstream audience.

I hadn't even heard of him, but your interesting liner notes makes me want to check him out and this looks like an excellent place to start. Whenever you require a trade, dear chap.......

Bah, you beat me to it, you bastard! ;-) Thanks for sending Change My Life, btw... I obviously haven't gotten around to this yet. Lovely job, although you did not include my favorite tune, "Don't Go to School", so I can still do one of these with a clear conscience.

This is great! Are you doing a Nikki Sudden mix, or should I tackle that one?

It's always exciting to see somebody post a single artist mix of somebody I know little about -- I'll definately be looking into this Epic soundtracks fellow. :)

Ah, this is paradise. I love "Sleepy City" especially. NOTE TO ROB AND SEAN: I HAVE ALREADY PURCHASED THE RIGHTS TO THE NIKKI SUDDEN SINGLE-ARTIST MIX. (But do not fret--there *is* a third brother and he's all yours. Sure he's illegitimate, but this is rock n roll!)
