Comment:
79:06 / 79:09A 2 parter that grew out of my use of Mr. Metheny within this current series; though he often gets
a skewed rap as a "Smooth Jazz" artist, I'd bet that (like track 13 from the Frankenstein
Mix concept) more people are into his stuff than care to admit it...and...the man can
play!
As I started digging through the stacks, I unearthed fifteen albums by either Metheny, his
Group or side projects (some of which I haven't played in several years). I attempted to keep
the ratio of Jazz to South American-influenced beats fairly even...and started cutting so many
songs that it eventually grew into a double set. Unfortunately I couldn't use anything off
'The Falcon & the Snowman' soundtrack or 'Zero Tolerance for Silence', as they
just didn't fit the "feel" of this double shot.
My favorite of all the albums represented herein has to be Question & Answer, recorded
with Dave Holland on bass and Roy Haynes on drums; I can set that one on 'repeat' @
the office and go just about all day long. Mixed so to enhance f-l-o-w vs. chronology
Feedback:
This looks excellent, Gene. As I've said here before, Metheny is burdened with a bit of a bad rap (rightly so in SOME instances?), but those in the know KNOW he can play with the best of them. Scared to include Zero Tolerance for Silence? You're right, it wouldn't fit. It's the one album, though (along with Song X, the one he did with Ornette), that gives silence to Metheny's snotty, holier-than-thou detractors. But if you listen to his playing on the above Garrett album, the Scofield album, the one with Holland and Haynes (which I've heard but don't have, alas) or his stint with Josh Redman, his jazz credentials are beyond reproach. Lanhamyodel (Claude) just sent me One Quiet Night, and I love it. There aren't many players out there who could sustain an entire album of solo guitar. (Quite the contrast to his solo effort on Zero Tolerance, eh?!) // All this said, Metheny IS a bit schizophrenic, and has recorded some MOR stuff that is just terrible. // I don't always like Metheny, but I do respect both his chops and some of the brave artistic choices he's made throughout his career.
As you and Edward mention, there are pros and cons when discussing Metheny BUT with music if I like it its good-and I like this a lot.
nice work, once again, Gene.
I've had that love/hate thing with him going back a long time but I do like to go out and see him play. This looks like a very cool collection of his work.
Super!
Beautiful Job.
Beautiful Job.
It's been many years since I've listened to Metheny--I didn't care too much for him then but this convinces me to give him another listen, maybe via this mix if we trade again sometime in the future.
Thanks for the comments. I too have some blacklisted Metheny; I don't dig every song on every album. But the songs I like...I really like! When he gets into his jazz /improv groove, it's a beautiful thang. As stated my favorite album here is Question & Answer; my favorites song on this mix...is Reunion--there's a great comradery going on there with riff/lead trade-offs and overall respect amongst the players involved.
I agree with Gene. I agree with Richard Thompson. I agree with Pat Metheny.
nice one. i believe awhile ago i went through my cds and havea core 4 of his left. like you, some hits, some misses, but, he "can" play the guitar, that's for sure........
I trust your judgement here g.a.b..., can't honestly say I know much of him, or his work. Possibly because of what I heard earlier on in my life and I just put him in that "not my cuppa' tea" category...
...and this one which looks like a perfect Metheny primer without the dross. And he's got plenty of dross. I'm in agreement re" "Question & Answer" too.
