Comment:

In July 1952, not long before his death at age 29, Hank Williams
released "Jambalaya (On the Bayou)."
It sang of good food, good times, and a bright (if rustic) future
with his fiancTe Yvonne.
The song was set in Cajun country, but
its appeal extended globally, far beyond those who may ever actually pole a pirogue
down a bayou.

Williams was from Alabama, and was no Cajun, but got his inspiration from
the Chuck Guillory song "Grand Texas." That song is
itself
still in print, and even appeared once on AOTM, thanks to
Franklin Onn.

Is a mix consisting entirely of versions of one song a good idea?
If you thought so, even for a brief moment, then check out examples by
other AOTManiacs at
Never Too Much of a Good Thing.

One other thing about the song "Jambalaya": unlike many technically complex
songs out there, where you have to learn at least 3 chords to play 'em,
"Jambalaya" can be played adequately with just two (I and V).

Jeez, you even have the Gerhard Wendland version (which dates from 1954). An the Estonian one (Estonian?!). And the Polish! Exquisite, to say the least.

Damn. I had already collected 18 versions of Jumbalaya and was poised to make a mix when you come along and steal my thunder. Oh well, at least you came up with 6 more versions than I did, and for that you get my respect.

Jumbo Jambalaya Jam!
I once watched a musical comedian do his "impressions" of Jambalaya as performed by various groups (Dylan, Beach Boys, Prince, etc.)- that was pretty funny, but probably never recorded. This is a great sampling including all the best ones I know of, plus others I don't know at all but would love to hear - any chance of that? (I don't think it would fit on here, but if you don't already have it in your collection, could I send you Homer & Jethro's ""Jam Bowl Liar"?)

Now we're talkin'! A perfect song if ever there was one. Favorite versions here include Lucinda's, Emmylou's and the Residents. And, of course, Hank (Sr. that is).

Jesus, this is crazy. But very, very compelling in a demented kind of way.
