[cont.: 31. The Positive Touch. 32. When Saturday Comes. 33. I Don't Know.]One of the greatest and perhaps least recognized (at least in the US) bands of the original punk era, the Undertones merged the girls-and-cars lyrical simplicity of early Beach Boys with the energy and brevity of early Ramones & Clash. Their first two albums were near-perfect, dual-guitar riffs and hormonal teenage sentiments and Feargal Sharkey's unique vibrato vocals (and the two are well encapsulated on an earlier Rob Conroy mix). Most fans checked out after that; personally, I think their third album, 1981's Positive Touch, has a few great songs, though they made a significant shift, replacing the hyper riffs with a more sophisticated new wave-influenced pop sound (bringing them more in line with Elvis Costello and Squeeze, though still set apart by Feargal's vox). I'm not a fan, however, of their fourth and final album, which found them embracing a more soul-tinged sound, so none of that is included here (nor is their post-reunion work).
Feedback:
A really great mix, Marc. I saw them in 1980 when I was only 16 and they were superb. I agree about the first two albums, didn't particularly enjoy the third, but there were parts of the fourth which I thought were magic, but I haven't heard the fourth album in a long time. I was not really a fan of Feargal's chart-friendly, pop sound, but I really dug That Petrol Emotion for a long time, and they still sound kinda fresh today.
This is right up my street.
Chocolate and Girls? I'm in!
Great picks all the way.
Great mix Marc. I recently rediscovered The Undertones after an absence from my stereo of well over 20 years. I met the band in 1979 when I was a mere 16 year old, they were a really decent bunch of blokes.
Great stuff.
This is great, Marc! Brings back lots of memories.
Y'know, Marc, if you want to work something out, I could use copies of their third and fourth albums. This looks like a great mix.
Another one of those bands I know little from, but what I've heard I like... Looks like it's a great intro -- :)
Nicely put together, Marc... and cool cover.
dig it!
Fantastic mix . . . The Undertones are hard to beat.
I'm partial to Positive Touch, because of the wonderfully economical arrangements & production. Elvis Costello's "Imperial Bedroom" is a similar fave. (The production on that one may not be economical, but it's certianly wonderful.)
Really nice picks here to a very under appreciated band.
Excellent
Great band & great lookin' mix!
