Comment:
Henry Grimes plays bass on these tracks. After a long while away from music (30+ years) Grimes was found living in LA. William Parker gave him a bass and Henry Grimes reemerged in the world of improvised music. I feel like a loser for not having any of the Gerry Mulligan or Lee Konitz or Chet Baker that Grimes plays on, but how would it fit into this mix? Weirdly. I'll have to go on a spree of some kind and then assemble the 'straight-ahead' Grimes comp. I had the Pleasure of seeing Mr. Grimes on Friday night at the HotHouse in Chicago with Marshall Allen, Fred Anderson and Avreeayl Ra. Words escape me, I couldn't be happier that Marshall Marrotte tracked Henry down in LA and re-introduced him to the world. The bass solo I excerpetd at the end of this mix is available on his website, www.henrygrimes.com and the record with Murray and Drake is on Ayler records. If you have the chance, go hear this master of modern music. Monk said that when his band was on, they "lifted the bandstand." Steve Lacy was fond of this quote, and he brings it up in the liner notes to the School Days album I took Brilliant Corners from. Henry Grimes and Marshall Allen lifted the bandstand on Friday andFeedback:
Great Stuff Nick!
I'm sure I'd probably like a handful of these, but I don't recognize much save 1 & 10.
Looks very interesting .
I'd love to hear this. I absolutely worship his playing on the Ayler, Sanders, and Taylor stuff that I've heard.
Great stuff Nick. Love the Lacy/Rudd and Grimes/Murray/Drake (never tire of "Flowers for Albert") picks especially.
