Comment:
I was being rather confrontational when I made the blanket statement that Clifford Brown was a better trumpeter than Davis. Although we agree on the point of Brown's superior technical facility; my phrasing was not well-chosen enough to indicate this. So for those who think I am a Davis detractor, this mix of things that might be overlooked in the consideration of this titan of 20th century music. "Milestones.." you say? "That's about as overlooked as the Mona Lisa.." Yes, but in comparison to Kind of Blue's sales and general esteem, Milestones must be regarded as the homely sister. And so I pay it tribute. A similar equation was at work when I chose Summertime from Porgy and Bess, rather than some of the Davis/Evans collaborations from Miles Ahead or Sketches of Spain. This Oleo is from Bag's Groove, but the Oleo on Relaxin' is good too. Salt Peanuts taken from Steamin', If I Were a Bell from Jazz at the Plaza. No Blues from Blackhawk volume 1, On Green Dolphin Street from the complete Plugged Nickel. Dang, I thought I was going to be able to fit more on here. Another volume, perhaps. We have just begun the 'iconoclast' phase of his career.Feedback:
Now I can breathe again. Wonderful stuff, Nick.
I was just doing the dishes now and thinking of a Best Of the Prestige sessions mix, but now I see you've beaten me to the punch a little bit. Maybe I'll wait on that. I did a four-mix series on Davis under my lostinthemix handle and was thinking of updating it, as I'm now prone to better documentation on my mixes. But I'll wait on that, too, and see what you do. This looks like a good start, although a Miles mix without a ballad or two is like an Ayler mix WITH a ballad or two. (As an aside: I don't know "Dr. Jackle". "Dr Jekyll" from Milestones, yes, but I've not heard "Dr. Jackle". Might you let me know where it's from?)
Oh, yeah, it is listed as Dr Jeckyll but that is the record label's mistake. I was thumbing through the Miles Davis and John Coltrane box while I was putting this together, where the error is corrected. It's a song by Jackie McLean, there's a record on Steeplechase called Dr. Jackle which is the only place I have McLean playing thie tune with the band from Jackie's New and Old Gospel, minus Ornette.
