Comment:
I wanted to see if it was possible to create a cd that had Ayler playing ballads, as per lostinthejazzmix's suggestion. Now, if you want to be particular, then none of this stuff qualifies as a ballad, because Ayler didn't care to 'play pretty' in the way that others would have. But all of these are taken at a more subdued tempo, if we can say that such a thing as tempo exists inside of a 'free' improvisation. Aside from Heart Love, all the tracks come from Revenant's Holy Ghost box set, easily the best thing I bought last year. Heart Love is from New Grass, which also has the 'album' version of New Ghosts, on which Ayler sings. Yeah, sings. The craziest thing to see the light of day on the Holy Ghost set is the Love Cry - Truth Is Marching In - Our Prayer, which is the medley of songs that Albert played at John Coltrane's funeral on July 21, 1967.Feedback:
Well, you set me straight. Kind of. ; ) I'd love to trade for this if you're interested. It looks fab.
wow
I like the artistic tension between you and Charles-it makes for good mixes.
Excellent! :)Love the title, idea and mix.
This looks really good. I ran across the Live in Greenwich Village: The Complete Impulse Sessions the other other day and almost picked it up. Now I'm conflicted, I may need to look for the Holy Ghost box instead...damn my limited budget!
Excellent.
Great idea and a great mix. Ayler is one of my personal musical heroes and it's great to see any kind of a tribute to him, let alone something as unexpected and fine as this.
On the face of it a pretty unlikely concept, but this looks like it would work. I'd really like to hear this (particularly as one of my works in progress is a versions of "Summertime" mix)
Nicely done.
