Comment:
Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane..Art Blakey and Max Roach..the composer playing his compositions. Allowing that I was not alive to see these songs played when Monk was alive, this is the closest I can get to how he meant them to sound. Coltrane asked to see the sheet music, but Monk preferred to play the melody for him to hear and repeat, not because he didn't have sheet music, but because the rhythmic character of the notes was as important as the pitches.Feedback:
Ingenious stuff all around - no matter what Miles said or is supposed to have said or whatever, man. ;)
Excellent! Monk's the business; there always seems to be so much humour and wisdom in his playing.
Just bought a disc today with Roswell Rudd and musicians from Mali playing, among other things, Jackie-ing. You'd probably think it perverted the rhythmic soul of Monk, of course. ; ) Can't go wrong with these choices, although some of my favourites (Bye-ya, Bemsha Swing, Blue Monk and the rhythmically challenging Epistrophy) are inevitably missing.
really great stuff. If you ever want to trade, please drop me a line.
I have been listening to Live At The Five Spot this past week so I'm feeling what you're saying....
I have the Ken Burn's series disc for Monk, and a few other Monks, but this is clearly one to hear given the mixed live and studio recordings. Let's do a trade.
This looks really great.
Fabulous!
Yes, a wonderful collection here.
Yup great stuff Nick!
Can't beat eary Sphereman.
Simply great. I love Friday the 13th especially.
Wicked mix.
Trying to wade through the multitude of Monk recordings to find definitive versions of compositions is a herculean task. All of the above are great.
