Comment:
This is a complete overhaul of a mix that I originally put together in September of '01. Every so often (probably for about two weeks a year) I get kind of obsessed with these fellas; thanks in part to Uncut's recent piece, that's been the past two weeks for me. At any rate, they certainly deserve some devotion. I can't think of many bands that had this much jaw-dropping talent in one spot: three of rock and roll's best vocalists (Rick Danko, Levon Helm and the positively immortal Richard Manuel); one of rock and roll's best guitarists (one Jaime Robbie Robertson), bassists (Danko) and drummers (Helm); a fantastic mad scientist of an arranger (Garth Hudson); and great songwriters aplenty, although I think I believe Levon when he says that Mr. Robertson snatched most of the credit there while the other members (other than Hudson) developed drug problems. This leans heavily toward the Manuel/Danko-sung ballads, mostly from the first two records, despite my desire to make it an evenly-distributed representation. Songs it killed me to cut: "We Can Talk", "Across the Great Divide", "Ain't No More Cane", "Jawbone", "Yazoo Street Scandal" and "Chest Fever." So here are my questions for fellow AotMers: 1) who was your favorite Band vocalist? (mine is Richard Manuel, although I absolutely *love* Levon's and Rick's vocals) and 2) what is your favorite Band song? (mine is "Whispering Pines", I think, although "It Makes No Difference" and "Katie's Been Gone" give it a run for its money)Feedback:
ooooo I love this band. Some great picks here.
I'm a big Band fan and this is good. Katies Been Gone is my fave, with It Makes No Difference and Rags and Bones right behind.
A couple of hard questions here following a great collection. I've always been partial to Levon Helm's singing although Richard Manuel had the best songs. I don't know if I could really pick a favorite song. I love almost everything they did. I did have several great live Band experiences including some late 60s gigs, seeing them on the fabled tour with Dylan and their great show at Watkins' Glen with the Allman Brothers and the Grateful Dead. They also put on a wonderful show in 93 touring for the reunion Jericho album. Robbie wasn't there but it was a great show especially their take on Springsteen's Atlantic City with Levon on mandolin. They were an awesome band.
well I think I gotta think about that for awhile, btw your cds arrived today
But I like Acadian driftwood alot
Outstanding tribute to one of my favorite...bands.
My favorite vocalist is Rick Danko (one of the coolest rock stars of all time...) although my favorite song has to be Whispering Pines.
Wow, George - seeing them in the 70's must've been great!

I can't name a favorite vocalist (though Garth Hudson had the best beard), but I'd have to go with "Chest Fever" (which just missed the cut unfortunately) as my favorite Band song. I still get goosebumps when I hear that organ solo, and I love that little ragtime bit in the middle that breaks up the song. Up On Cripple Creek is close behind, along with many others you've included here.
"Don't ya tell Henry" is my favourite of theirs.
I never really liked The Band until recently. The only songs I ever gave a chance were their biggest hits- "Up On Cripple Creek" and "The Weight". I even had a boxset of The Band (a friend of a friend of a friend left it at my house long ago, and never came back to get it). I might've listened to it once at the most, before selling it at a yard sale last year for a dollar. I also sold my Robert Johnson boxset for a dollar, but that's another story). Then one day, I saw the movie Festival Express whilst stoned out of my noggin'. I was blown away by The Band's performances. Now I think The Band is best thing ever, and I regret selling the boxset. (I don't regret selling the Robert Johnson boxset, but that's another story).
Can't say about the vocalists, but Whispering Pines is probably my favorite song. They're an underrated Band, I think. This looks really great.
Looks excellent, Rob.
I think The Band is the best band I ever heard. The vocals are wonderful and people don't give them credit for the wonderful music they made.
