Comment:
A revision and revisitation to a mix I made a couple years back, The Farcical Travels Of Whimsical Pete. While that was one of my favorites, I found it too schizophrenic, and the headier psychedelic stuff clashed with the lighter, whimsical late '60's British feel I was shooting for. So this time I've stripped away most of the more heavy-duty psychedelia (some of which I'm setting aside for another work-in-progress) and honed my original intent: The oh-so-twee veddy veddy British quaintness of '66-'68, with just a hint of psychedelia (perhaps a bit more so on some tracks, particularly the first and last). Sprightly little slices of life, with just a touch of dread and serious mind-warping just around the fringes.A few observations & commentaries:
1) No, it's not that Nirvana; rather, it's the UK version, best known (i.e. not at all) for their failed but occasionally intriguing concept album The Story Of Simon Simopath, which many idiot grungheads inadvertently purchased (and then wrote nasty posts on Amazon.com complaining they were deceived) -- of course, a lawsuit against the Seattle band that resulted in the reunited UK band being allowed to record a cover of "Lithium" only served to confuse matters further.
2) If there has ever been a more joyous moment in music than Donovan's transition from the hokey Spinal Tap-esque poem into the jaw-droppingly catchy chorus of "Atlantis," I have yet to hear it.
3) Whoever told British Invasion pop-wimps Chad & Jeremy that adding some reverb and sitar lines (and some occasionally biting lyrics) to their songs would make them cool and hip was pulling a fast one; still, their Of Cabbages & Kings album is underrated and has its moments.
4) David Bowie's "The Laughing Gnome" may be the most horrifying piece of music ever recorded -- particularly the ghastly gnome puns ["what's that ticking sound?" "a metro-gnome"] -- but if he'd been slaughtered immediately afterward, as might have been warranted at the time, we never would have gotten Ziggy Stardust. So I'm glad nobody pulled it off.
5) Yes, Sgt. Pepper still gets all the credit. But I'll take Ogden's Nut Gone Flake, Village Green Preservation Society, Odessey & Oracle, Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, and SF Sorrow any day.
Feedback:
pretty trip this time, looking forward to see the next one
Quintessentially quaint.
absolutely wonderful mix, Marc. Great selections, cover notes and a mindblowing cover.
Marc you,ve really done well here.Superb.As Gerry said great cover and notes also.
This looks great!
Hail Atlantis! Very nice.
Cups of tea and gas fires all the way! Great. (For my money Odessey & Oracle is miles ahead of Sgt Pepper...)
I was almost one of those "idiot" Nirvana fans that almost bought that Nirvana album back when I started to get into music. I actually wish I did buy it. Perhaps I would have got into 60s rock music a lot sooner. Or not. Anyway, great looking mix. Great Zombies picks.
Beautifully achieved popkulcher. I've been digging in the same fields for ten days now and have probably heard 90% of the tracklist here in said span. I'm right with you on Notes nos. 2,3, and 5...SF Sorrow especially. ( I revisit the tracklist and can hear those transitions, esp. Pentecost Hotel into Jeremy Carabine...)
And before I offend anyone else (and I'm hoping Salman wasn't offended), I didn't mean to suggest that all Nirvana fans are idiots. But reading through the Amazon.com reviews where Nirvana (Cobain) fans rage about buying the wrong album is amusing (though no less goofy are the people who concluded that "Lithium" is a cover originally written by the UK band).
Nice! Since I have a copy of your original disc, I'd love to hear this one to compare them! I heartily agree with comments 2 and 5.
haha i must admit I looked at it and said "Ive never heard that Nirvana song..." but Im a mild fan of the U.K. Nirvana.
brilliant!:)
Outstanding collection here! Everything is great.
Yes, yes, yes, yes, Marc... perfect. I loved the original version of this, but can certainly see your point. With that in mind, please send a copy when you can. :-) (And btw, I love Nirvana, as well, despite hating all that they've spawned, directly and indirectly. I, however, did not take offense.)
can't beat this, nice!!!!!!!
Fab! Uncut magazine had a covermount CD not that long ago with a similarly demented collection of late-60s brit acid whimsy. This looks just as good. "Atlantis" (on that disc as well) is indeed quite a, er, treat.
Ditto to everything already said. Ace!
Great work finding all these.
Damn fine Mark!
Dim -- Damn! I actually have that Uncut collection (incidentally one of the best collections ever included in one of the UK music mags) and totally spaced it out. Guess I'll have to save it for the next revision.
I was at a Nirvana concert in San Diego in 1992 and I kept yelling at them to play "Pentecost Hotel." Man did I get some strange looks. Anyway, I have the original version of this mix as well, which I thought was great. I'll take your word for it that this version is better. I still haven't heard that Bowie song, but it sounds hilarious. A metro-"gnome"! This guys a comedian. Ziggy played the Improv.
ALL GREAT! I"m with you on comment #5, of course. Save me a copy, eh?
Yet another winner. Great transition from the Zombies into the Brothers Gibb. Great Move pick. I saw the dB's do a very faithful cover of Atlantis to a very confused crowd.
Nice collection. Great cover too.
Excellent mix through and through. Love this stuff!
