Comment:
Initially I wanted to make a Goth mix in the name of nostalgia but as always I moved elsewhere and found myself looking for pre-Goth material that either had a Gothic sensibility or could be seen as a direct influence on Goth. I've never found an exact date for Goth but I've always presumed that The Banshees' 81 release of Ju Ju marked it's conception as a musical tag. It's true that Tony Wilson employed Goth to describe his band Joy Division in about 1979 but no one who remembers that time (and I do) would call Joy Div a Goth Band. Likewise, The Birthday Party who seem to turn up on every Goth Package with Release The Bats were never a Goth Band though in their earlier incarnation (The Boys Next Door), Shivers demonstrates a band that might have gone the way Bauhaus did. This mix had it's roots in the following tomes: `The Dark Reign Of Gothic Rock' by Dave Thompson, `Gothic: Transmutations Of Horror In Late Twentieth Century Art' edited by Christoph Grunenberg and `Gothic Rock' by Mick Mercer. Enjoy. Picture is of my best friend Dan and myself (I'm the one leaning forward looking like an absolute tosser) in 1980 something or other first year Art School, Brighton, England!
Feedback:
superb, love the first side , adore the second one
Great mix, great notes and cover! Was your friend hypnotizing you with that watch?
A great idea, excellently executed.
Fine songs and kudos for the history.
For us Americans who don't quite talk right, what might be a "tosser"?

Ilike the thought process and execution!
hohoholy lord. I like it. Every track is a classic.
Fascinating. I'd love to hear this.
This looks tremendous. Lots of my favourite songs ever are on here!
*points at you* GOTH! GOTH! (Like I can talk.) As far as history goes, Gavin Baddeley says the Doors were the first band to have the adjective "gothic" applied to their music, though as a subcultural descriptor it didn't become common until around 1981, as you say. This set is an excellent idea and some goths I know could do with listening to it.
Fantastic summation & essential listening, Dom. Fuck if we don't need to get you a CD burner.
Excellent, sir. And, er, what Jim said . . . ;)
Well thought out and excellent! Am a big fan of gothic music... and my closet is all black.. so if I will vouch for this mix. To coin a phrase, you could call this proto-goth.. maybe.
i love that john cale version of heartbreak hotel. its about as black as goth gets. great mix, sexy cover!
Wonderful! I love it all!!
As always, Dom's mix is a revelation and an education. I wouldn't have (on my own) thought of Screamin' Jay as a goth precursor, but it makes perfect sense in this context.
This looks fantastic. I admit that I was skeptical of the contents of this mix based upon the title (without looking at the track listing), but upon viewing it all makes perfect sense and features top tunes bursting from every seam.
an original take on what you'd think would be a stale theme. I love love love that you've got "dracula's daughter" on there. The lyrics of that one virtually define the goth look ( "lips of blue/ eyes of red...") 2 decades before it actually caught on.
Gothalicious, love the pic.
not a goth; never have been. but this would have made reconsider.
What are you doing with your hands Dom? and I like Dan's smoking action. Great music.
I really like this one because you took goth beyond the expected confines. Great selections. Again FAB picture! Very dramatic.
think you look a bit like george micheal...mix as amazingly ecclectic as ever
sorry michael
Fun and stimulating, as always as always as always. I'm with Lo-Fi ... where's the damn burner!
Damn. Amazing.
Unexpected and inspired choices, Dom.
