Comment:
This mix was commissioned for me months ago by my friend K.C. She asked me for a mix to play "for dancing" at her wedding reception on May 14th, cautioning me that there would be quite the range of age groups and musical interests at this thing (as well as the fact that my mix will be one of four played that evening). With that in mind, I put this together, attempting to include the obvious but not *too* obvious next to the occasional slight obscurity... all with the idea in the back of my mind that my choices would have to be songs that would make *me* (as someone who doesn't particularly feel like donning boogie shoes at these types of gatherings) want to get up and dance. Although I think that this is fairly successful (and although I think I have all of the tracks selected that I want to select), I'm open to suggestions re: sequencing (particularly with regard to the last three songs... specifically, should "Let's Stay Together" be bumped to 19, thus rounding out the mix with Magnetic Fields and Ray Charles?). So expect revisions to this one in the next month and a half... Title courtesy of Stephin Merritt.Feedback:
I dj at a wedding last year and the only songs from this I played were 9,10,14,15,17, but a tip from me play a lot from the wedding couples youth or music from the days when they met
I think Let's Stay Together makes a fine closer. ... and a nice diversity for the "age group spread"... i.e. Hey Ya.
Looks good to me.
Thank goodness there is no Robbie Williams on it, what a relief! Is it too late to put Eric Clapton 'Wonderful Tonight' on it? although that might be too slow and soppy. How about John Paul Young's "Love is in the air" from the Strictly Ballroom soundtrack?
I LOVE IT!!! But it will only work if you PROMISE to do your James Brown dance when that song comes on....
I'd love to see a lot of folk's partents and grandparents dancing to "Fools Gold"!
should be "Parents", although I have been reading a lot of James Joyce lately.
I DJ'd (sic) a wedding once, no matter how carefully you plan the songs; if a song hasn't been heard at least 1,000,000 times - people WON'T dance! This looks good to me, though!
WHAT? NO CHICKEN DANCE? Whew! That's a relief!
At my wedding I found that how many people danced depended a lot on the couple -- my partner and I danced A LOT and had a lot of fun, so people we cared about joined in. Trust me, I don't think my mom or dad had ever heard R Kelly's "Ignition (remix)" before but they were both out there...
I personally think the very last song of the night is the most important... Ours was "Tonight We Fly" by The Divine Comedy -- not well known by any means, but our friends joined a circle around us and we all danced and it was perfect...
I think Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" is seen as kind of campy by some people due to it's inclusion on the Pulp Fiction sdtk -- if it were ME, I'd go with the Ray Charles... Don't get me wrong, I think you've done a great job with this!

Great mix...I love the Sly, Prince, Eddie Bo, James Brown...and I think the Al Green makes a great closer.
Good stuff! I agree with Sport. As one who has attended about 20 weddings in the last year, I've seen plenty of dancefloors clear out when the dj put on something even remotely obscure, no matter how danceable. As much as I like Magnetic Fields and Nina Simone, they might cause guests to scratch their heads, and not shake their tailfeather. Also that Stone Roses song might be a bit long, unless you can edit it down to about 4 minutes. People also love dancing to AC/DC (You Shook Me All Night Long is always good), the B-52s and any 70s disco. Hope this helps!
Eddie Bo and Outkast: perfect together! Nice mix.
Fun! nice work.
This is top notch, Rob. Nice blend of the not-too-obvious with the occasional obscurity, as you said. For the record, I have seen grandmothers dancing to "Girls & Boys" at a wedding before. A sight to behold!
this looks like a nice cross section of picks that will get the folks dancing and yet open them up to some things that they may not have heard before. very clever sneaking Magnetic Fields in there for the obligatory slow dance of the night...i can't wait to see the revisions.
nice job, rob.
this looks like it would fill the bill.....
good enough to make me want to get married again
Nice job, but you didn't include D-I-V-O-R-C-E, which really should be de rigeur at any partnership rite.
Cool mix, man. Good taste.
Very nice.
This looks like a nice mix to play at a wedding, but if I were you I'd throw in some tounge-in-cheek songs like "Single Again" by the Fiery Furnaces or something... just to see the reactions.
Lookin' good Rob, found my own 3 Wedding Mixes the other day after talking to laura bout her wedding mix. Off the top of my head only Blur & Sly are both shared by us but this looks neat all the same. If I had to add anything constructive, I'd say go with a few more all-time classics just as other folks have said!
