Comment:

Once again I've avoided plunging into the netherworld of Goth - this is pretty much what I was listening to as a 16/17 yr old schoolboy, with the exception of Psychic TV.I clearly remember Bauhaus in the N.M.E. and hearing Bela on the small wonder 12" (still got it) and wearing eye liner..eye liner & a dead man's coat a la Echo & The Bunnymen - it was a dark Aqua Scutum (sic) coat & I loved it..pixie boots..oh jeez. The Bunnymen weren't goth but their sound was dark, I remember one of The Sunday Magazines running an article on bands who'd been influenced by Apocalypse Now.Vietnam was suddenly chic.for chrissakes we never went to Vietnam.& The B-Men used to drape their equipment in army netting..The Walker Brothers made a dark album that Bowie creamed himself over & cited as a major influence on Lodger.& Julian Cope was also creaming himself over Scott Walker and was preparing to release The Great Fire Escape In The Sky (got it still) compilation of Walker's solo work.Simple Minds had still to turn utter crap or at least Kerr had still not turned Simple Minds crap even though he looked like a deranged monk trying to look like the even more deranged Lou Reed circa Transformer ..Tom Waits was playing Jack Kerouac & still to visit the cemetry & fashion instruments from rib cages.Joy Div was soon to lose Curtis & guess what they chose another Nazi sounding name.Lux Interior was displaying an unhealthy interest in Poison Ivy's Wardrobe.Siouxsie was becoming Morticia Adams after she'd stuck her wet fingers into a power point. The Gun Club had yet to recruit Patricia Morrison which meant Jeffrey had to stand up while playing.ahh but I'll stop now. Picture is of me in a play I wrote/directed at school. The influence of Peter Murphy is purely coincidental. Yah right.

Marvellous. If this were on CD, I'd trade for it. No, I'd even buy it. Top compilation. And early Simple Minds rocked. They've been one of my great discoveries so far this year.
