Comment:

So I was fortunate enough (in some ways) to score the Rhino Handmade box set collecting all of famed songwriter Jimmy Webb's '70s solo material, only to find that: 1) Rhino didn't bother to include the fifth disc of Webb's 1972 Royal Albert Hall performance, thereby entitling me to return the set, which is a positive thing because 2) it's actually pretty lame. Although Webb's '60s songs ("By the Time I Get to Phoenix", "Galveston" and "Wichita Lineman", particularly) are classics, his '70s records (for the most part) sound like super-bland, washed-out Christian rock with baroque pop and prog touches. It was a struggle finding material good enough to fill out this 80-minute disc, but this is the result. In the meantime, my burning hardware is on its last legs--the CD-Rom drive in my laptop has shut down completely, and my external burning drive sounds like it's going to implode very soon with the extra work required for it to transfer data to my hard drive. I'll have to see what I can do. In the meantime, I've only got one more disc to copy for the trades that I've promised, so I can probably get that done before the big bang. We'll see how it goes.

i don't know much about Mr. Webb except for his "classics" (and then always interpreted by someone else) but i'm always interested in hearing how a songwriter interprets his own work, when it is usually known as being performed by someone else. (although not enough to try and track down that box set.) Here's to hoping your burning equipment can make it through the night...
