Comment:
My long-delayed take on the Spirit canon, finally inspired (and assisted by) popkulcher, who supplied me with "Holy Man" (as well as convincing me to re-purchase their first three albums by sending me a comp of their early material) after submitting his own Spirit mix a couple of months ago. I agree with him that these fellas (particularly the mighty Randy California) are seriously underrated; unlike him, I'd say that their work outclasses that of both the Airplane (with the possible exception of Surrealistic Pillow) and post-debut Moby Grape, and holds its own with the Dead's studio output. Compiling this was indeed difficult--much more difficult than I imagined it'd be--and I had to leave off a ton of tracks (most notably "Dream Within a Dream", "1984", "She Smiles" and "Victim of Society"), which may require a volume two (I never thought I'd need two volumes of Spirit!). The last track cut--which was completely agonizing and was probably determined to be more disposable because it's a cover version--was Randy California's "I Don't Want Nobody." Lastly, it's odd that my favorite Spirit album, Spirit of '76, is only represented by only two songs, both of which are covers (but wow, what covers they are--they really have to be heard to be believed); I guess that's because it's a fantastic listening/sonic experience as a whole, but really doesn't contain many amazing individual tracks...Feedback:
One of my very favourite West Caost bands & like you say massively underrated. You've done 'em justice. Good one!
Having never had more than glancing knowledge of Spirit, you've piqued my interest with this.
The Spirit moves me!
Yes! I've been listening to a TON of Spirit lately.
Nice picks, Rob!
Nice picks, Rob!
I'm with Shunn, I've only heard a few songs.... I will Definitely Be checking them out.
I got a line on you! Big fun.
Glad you're also reveling in the Spirit revival (ok, a few UK reissues of obscure albums may not quite constitute a revival, but good enough for me). I'll probably be revisiting my Spirit mix as a 2-cd set (once the final round of reissues is complete).
a great band and a nice mix.
Wow, don't know *anything* by these fellas... I'll have to check 'em oot.
Devine!
I also don't know a lot about Spirit.Going by your other mixes this'll be good though.
cool mix. although i haven't heard anything after 'dr. sardonicus', i would say they match up pretty well against the dead's psych stuff, but they don't exactly have an 'american beauty' or even a 'workingman's dead'
Oh, I agree with you, ahfunk. I like all of the Dead's pre-Allah albums better than any Spirit album, but I was just noting that their stuff isn't noticeably inferior, despite their dramatically unsung reputation.
Rob, I'll bow to your better knowledge of Spirit. I've only got a shoddy best of and Twelve Dreams. But what I've heard here I like.
favorite is Spirit of 76, eh? Haven't heard it. Family that Plays Together was a staple of high school. The candy striped $6 sign in window was still on the motel windor on Sunset Blvd by the time I got to college in 73. also I loved Dr Sardonicus.
