a 'best of' what i've been listening to recently to give to a few people that i've promised a mix.

the Old 97's express their admiration for the talents of their fellow texan musician in "miss molly".

i last saw Oh Susanna play an open gig in a church just off the c-train line in calgary. i thought it tragic that the homeless sprawled
out across the street weren't brought in to experience the magic.

according to malcolm, my co-worker from halifax, the fellows in Cool Blue Halo just get together for laughs.

the David Byrne track is lifted from the nov.2004 wired mix cd that was released under a creativecommons license.

Ruth Ruth was a one-hit wonder ('uninvited'), but actually have a couple of other decent tracks on their cd.

had sorta heard of the Guthries thru the cancon grapevine, but after greg lent me his copy of their cd, i'll be getting a few of their cd's for myself.

i saw frente! open for the barenaked ladies in houston ('one week' was still just bubbling under) - the lead singer for frente! is *really* short !

i had never been tempted by the Sadies, but when i learned that they played with Neko Case, i ran out to buy all of their cd's at once :)

oh, and that malcolm fellow is pretty versatile, playing bass and singing lead for this track by Prize Pig in halifax before joining us in the north.

i saw treble charger play in the summer of 2001 at the molson snojam in olympic plaza in
downtown calgary.

my morning jacket is another band featured on that fabulous wired mix.

the brown eyed susans are a calgary indie band that i picked up on one of my swings thru megatunes, that city's best music store.

lipstick vogue introduced me to the vandals via a mixtrade. with such great taste, it's no wonder that she now has her own radio show.

passing thru calgary, i heard a catchy song on the radio by Bowling for Soup that quoted the lyrics of a bunch of 80's classics. i headed to megatunes (as usual) to pick up a copy of the cd. my disappointment that the catchy song wasn't on the cd was lessened when i heard the rest of the tracks.

this year's iqaluit presentation of the banff mountain film festival featured a skiing movie, 'sinners', that had an soundtrack of atypical folky music to accompany the wild powder action. that night, i downloaded a copy of my fave track for free from amazon.

the latest Northern Ramblers cd release party was held at the iqaluit Legion - halfway thru their rendition of "When You're Gone", i found myself already singing along.

i saw Kelly Hogan open for Neko Case at a club in london while getting my Masters at UWO.

i first heard the Jayhawks on one of those Stolar vodka cd's that someone had pawned off at Tramps', the music store that i worked at in saskatoon while getting my history degree.

for our production of 'ends of the earth' in december, we used this awesome Tom Waits track for the curtain call.

still don't know if i like Sarah Harmer's stuff or not. finally decided to rip the tracks with bits that i liked and chop out the parts that didn't grab me.

i remember buying cd's from the lead singer for Zuckerbaby when he used to work at the hmv in the TD Square mall in downtown calgary. turns out he was married to someone who worked at the same place i did in calgary - and she used to be in my high school class in turtleford !

i remember being completely enamoured with sinead after seeing her in full-bronzed intensity in the video for 'troy'.

cover photo is from a snowmobiling trip out on the land outside of iqaluit.
