Comment:
A fine but sadly underappreciated band (I assume) finally getting its due. Though initially starting off as a bit of a schizophrenic blend of Pavement and Stereolab, they soon found their voice as a cute, kitschy mix of late '60's sunshine pop (i.e. Free Design, Association) coupled with the dense, orchestrated Brian Wilson-infused pop of the Elephant 6 scene. Lots of strings and horns, baritone Stephen Merritt-esque male vocals intertwined with twee female vox, and waltzy tempo changes. I mixed in some of the more electric early stuff (avoiding a chronological arrangement) to keep things varied, but drew largely from their 3 more recent discs. As even their best albums (i.e. Albemarle Sound and last year's self-titled album) drag over the course of an entire album, they do seem to work better culled into a single highlights disc.Feedback:
Don't know anything on this Marc, but,I haven't came across a bad mix from you yet.
All I know about them is "The Albemarle Sound" got some nice reviews. Something to check out.
Clueless but if you'd care to correct that I'd be most grateful!
Never heard of them but your description
definitely makes me curious. Would you be interested in a trade?

I have two albums by them, which I haven't listened to all that much. I probably should. This mix looks great.
Ooh. A great mix for a great band.
Gary Olsen is a genius and you've made some good picks here. too bad you didn't include their cover of "Galveston" from the Kindercore singles club...
Cool tribute! I like this band a lot. They played the Warhol museum a few years back. Pretty neat set, if just a bit introspective.
Don't know these guys but it looks interesting & cool.
I must check them out, as I am quite unfamiliar.
Color me clueless, but they sound interesting, and I totally trust your taste, and man oh man, that's a great cover. Interested in a trade?
I've thought about doing this, as Jennifer Ladybug now lives is a friend of mine who now lives in Pittsburgh (in fact, the first-ever mix that I submitted to this site was made for her), but settled for compiling the Essex Green (and their related projects) instead. Cool mix, although you (bizarrely, I have to admit, from my perspective) left off the tune that I've always considered their masterpiece, "Today Knows."
I've never heard a second of this band - looks interesting...
I'm clueless Marc but I dig the cover!
A very cool band. I really like "Albemarle Sound," but "Argyle Heir" left me cold. Maybe I should check out their self-titled effort, which appears to be their latest.
Don't know a thing here but will take your word for it!
I love this band, although the only album I've heard is Albermarle Sound. ("Today Knows" is my favorite too). I'd love to hear what I've missed out on...
I've bought three albums of theirs and yet, I've still never quite gotten into them. I don't know how I do that to myself sometimes. I think it was because they were really cheap used copies. Still, a good band even though I've come to realize that while it's really close to the sound I like, I'm not into it.
Add my name to the ever-growing list of people who want to hear this. I've heard a few of their songs, which didn't leave much of an impact on my ears, but perhaps a whole mix will d the trick.
