Comment:
This is the first of this series, plainly inspired by (and posted in solidarity with) p the swede's recent series with the same theme. This was really, really difficult to do... say, for instance, you like more than one song by a lousy band... do you post the lousiest song you can tolerate and call it a "guilty pleasure", do you post the song that you semi-secretly love by that band, or do you post the song that's the most middle-ground? I did all of the above in compiling this mix, eventually going with the songs that worked best for mixing purposes. I actually composed (and have saved, if anyone wants it) a track-by-track breakdown for this mix. Unfortunately, it runs for 4 pages and couldn't fit here. Perhaps I'll try to shorten it soon. In the meantime, PLEASE let me know if you'd like a copy of the comments and I'll send them along. Trust me, it's worth your while and will lead to a much more comprehensive understanding of this mix.Feedback:
i think i need to see those comments Rob...some of these picks i understand, but Madonna, Bread and KATRINA AND THE WAVES? i'm beginning to question your sanity friend...
Wow! This is terrific. The thing about the songs we label "guilty pleasures" is that they - for better or worse - are more than just the songs themselves. They become a sythesthesia of feelings, emotions, memories, associations, even smells, from the time and place when they attached themselves so deeply to our cerebral cortex. And I love ELO...Awesome job, Rob.
These are great tunes Rob-send the comments my way please.
I'd be interested in the comments as well - I always find them interesting, more interesting at times than some mixes! But never really do it well myself.
And that Katrina & the Waves tune is a great pop song, maybe not great music, but very effective.

Yes I created a monster ;)
soon my third GP mix will be up, always nice to see what you really like

Wow.
I'm so desperately unhip that I never know which of my musical tastes to be ashamed of (except the polka - everybody tells me I wrong to love polka). I never realized that I should feel guilt about loving "Walking on Sunshine." Now I know & will atone properly.

Well, I think I'd like to see those comments too some time.
haha. I love it. I'd be interested in an e-mail transcript of those notes. I'm particularly interested in the background info on "crazy for you" and "one for the razorbacks" ;)
After reading your comments, I think you're off-base about Neil Diamond - in his day he was a pretty good songwriter, personality notwithstanding. "Billy" is a totally great song - one of my earliest 45 purchases. That Ace song is really cool, and he's a totally great guitar player, too. The ELO is, obviously, brilliant - and there are many good songs in their catalog. And so on...
but Sean, wasn't "in his day" his incredibly prolific 1965-70 period, which Rob stated he unapologetically appreciates? it's only pieces of shit like "september morn" and "america" that make him the hack that Rob claims he is...
Indeed, Papa Brandt, indeed.
Dude, that Carpenters track is awesome. I listen to that song and the Carpenters unabashedly!
we all have our ittle guilty pleasures. This may move me to show my own........and then run for cover!
Hilarious notes & picks, Rob. I hear you on most of these as well, at least up to the Counting Crows. If I recall correctly, OMD predates Depeche Mode. At any rate, they both appeared during the anti-guitar movement in the early 80's. I still like the first LPs by both of them, but if that remains the legacy of that period, what crap.
Fun mix. I'd been meaning to submit my own mix of guilty pleasures, but you beat me to the punch. (Though I more or less submitted my own list of enjoyable kitsch in a different form awhile back.) Many of these joys I share with you ("New York Groove," "Walking On Sunshine," "Brother Love," "Billy," "Superstar"). And as with any collection like this, you're going to draw some groans from those who think there's nothing to be ashamed of in loving some of these (I've always found "Catch" to be among the Cure's finest moments, and I've never been abashed about liking Simon & Garfunkel).
Okay I love 'Superstar' unreservedly (and put it on a mix last year) but Katrina and the Waves?? send me those notes please Rob!
I agree with Lo-Fi here...interesting picks!
Yep, these look like guilty pleasures alright. I'll have to investigate that Ace Frehley song and the Three Dog Night and James Gang selections. "Walking on Sunshine" makes me want to step in front of a speeding Hummer -- it's just so saccharine! I do find Bread to be a bit of a guilty pleasure as well, as I have a worn copy of the Best of Bread.
The Ace Frehley/Katrina/Knack trio looks swell to me. The first step to a successful recovery is the admission that you have a problem Rob ;-)
Heh, I'd love to check out your track-by-track breakdown. Can you email it to me?
Excellent. Looks like this mix was posted before I found AotM. I won't tell you how I found it, but if you've still got the comments I'd love to give them a read..
