A Little Bit Of Heaven: The Darling Buds Compiled
Comment:
Part of the intermittent "making single artist mixes of the bands I rarely listen to any more so I can box up the cd's and make some room on the shelves" series. The 'Buds were part of the late '80's boomlet in UK blonde-girl-fronted pop bands, with their '88 debut Pop Said remaining a fine entry in the field. Simple, crunchy, riff-happy, 3-chord girl-meets-boy power pop, a bouncy blend of the Go-Go's and the Buzzcocks. Wall-to-wall hooks (with 10 of the 12 songs making the cut here). The 2 follow-up albums found them trading the pure pop for a trendier shoegazing sound, with dance-worthy beats and layered walls of guitars, but retaining enough catchiness to stand out from the likes of, say, Lush or Curve. Still plenty of near-perfect radio-friendly ditties. Then they broke up. None of this is exactly timeless, but it's 80 minutes of nostalgic fun. Alas, I never bothered tracking down their b-sides, so nothing unusual here.Feedback:
Based on your notes, this band looks worth looking into.
nostalgia indeed. haven't heard these kids since, well, these records first came out. what a trip down memory lane.
I've inherited a lot of early Darling Buds' stuff including a couple of demo and interview tapes. You're missing their best (IMHO) song "If I Said" from their very first single, but that apart - good work.
Well, this is a flashback to me. Very nice "IF" is a great song to end a mix with. I would have also included "Let's Go 'round There." a rare track work looking into.
I'll wait for you to compile The Primitives...good stuff!
Funny, I was planning a Primitives mix as well...
This mix is just darling, buddy! I love me some Darling Buds! One of the first mixes I posted here (made for a gal in London) included about 7 or 8 of their b-sides. Now bring on the Primitives, their seperated at birth twin. I'm working on my Transvision Vamp mix...
Now I'm interested in hearing me some Darling Buds. :)
i will have to unearth my cassette collection to hear that 'pop said' tape again. you've got a fine compilation here.
