Comment:

If one of the hallmarks of a song's greatness is the number & variety of cover versions, then the Gershwin / Gershwin / Heyward / Heyward classic is most definitely a contender. Here's the evidence...and no, the absence of Joplin isn't an oversight. I know I'm in a minority here but I consider her semi-hysterical caterwauling one of the most over-rated noises in pop. Thanks to Nick F for the Ayler track. You're a prince!

I did one of these, and since I don't know jack about HTML, here's the unelegant link: http://www.artofthemix.org/FindAMix/getcontents.asp?strMixID=82485. Looks like we have only a couple of duplicates. (Oh, and unlike you, I really dig her version of the song.) Some of these I shudder at, but most look great. I'd love to hear 15, especially.

Well lost beat you to the punch, but it is a song worth hearing over and over - nice work. And you now have a place in "Never Too Much of a Good Thing" - check it out at AOTM Exhibitions.

This is fantastic! Nice choices. I'm a huge Gershwin fan, and this is one of my favorite songs. My mom used to sing it to me when I was little. Have you ever heard the Nick Drake version? It's lovely...

Have you heard the UFO mix of Sarah Vaughan's version? I'm sure lostinthejazzmix knows about it, being a huge jazz fan and all. You can find the track on the Verve Remixed disc. It's pretty wild.

Having had a great time with lostinthejazzmix's "Summertime" collection, I'd love to trade something to hear this too . . .
This is a real shape-shifter of a song, it seems to belong to a whole lot of different performers -

Looks really great. I think there are so many versions, almost EVERYONE could do this mix and not repeat songs.

As soon as I saw this I was crossing my fingers that you put the Resident's cover on this mix and YAY, there it is!

I'm putting together a "Summertime" mix for my 5th graders. This has helped a bunch, thanks. Great choices. Booker T and the MGs' is a personal fave.
